The SUSU Laboratory of Functional Materials was established at the Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre in 2018. At present, the laboratory conducts research in the field of condensed matter physics, magnetism, metals and alloys, as well as studies new functional materials.

Every year, young scientists of South Ural State University take part in the UMNIK (Smart Guy) programme which provides support to commercially oriented R&D projects. Winners of the programme receive grants in the amount of 500 000 rubles for bringing their projects to life.

South Ural State University presented its research projects at the Russian Agricultural Exhibition “Golden Autumn 2019”. The university’s developments in angroindustrial technologies were highly evaluated, and an awards ceremony for the Geoinformation Systems Research and Education Centre staff, who won gold and silver medals at the exhibition, was held at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Chelyabinsk Region on October 18th.
Associate Professor of the SUSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Anna Krasavina, took part in another science-to-practice conference on Journalism in a Global Context arranged by the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) and held at the Institute of Journalism of the Technical University Dortmund (Germany). The Conference in Dortmund had been arranged in cooperation with the Africa Institute for Media, Migration and Development (AIMMAD) and the African Media Initiative (AMI) Association under sponsorship of the Robert Bosch Foundation.
The PlantWeb Laboratory of Intelligent Information and Measurement Systems of Process Control Based on the Distributed Intelligence Architecture (Emerson-METRAN-SUSU) was born as a result of a long-standing and close cooperation between the Metran Industrial Group and South Ural State University.

On October 15 of 2019, Head of the Centre of Testing and Language Training, Associate Professor of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language, Elena Doronina, held an online master class entitled “Training to pass a B2 level certification exam” at the Pushkin Institute Centre of Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU). Taking part in the master class were 26 second-year students of the TFSU Faculty of Russian Language.
In 2017, with the support from SMS Group, a world’s leading manufacturer of metallurgical equipment, South Ural State University opened an international research Laboratory of Mechanics, Laser Processes and Digital Production Technologies, which was headed by Professor of the National Engineering School of Saint-Étienne Philippe Bertrand. A big-scale URAL FEST International Students Forum on training international students in Russian universities will be held at South Ural State University November 14th through November 16th, 2019.
This event will bring together students and alumni from different countries, who chose the Ural Federal District universities to gain prestigious higher education. The forum will touch upon burning issues faced by international students.
South Ural State University together with Lyceum No.11 of the city of Chelyabinsk arranged field trips for schoolchildren to hold outdoors master classes in Lesnaya Zastava Children’s Camp. The Synthesis and Analysis of Food Ingredients Laboratory was opened at the SUSU School of Medical Biology in 2016, within the frameworks of Project 5-100. The laboratory was created for the purpose of searching for solutions of the tasks in the field of developing the technologies of synthesizing food bio-polymers and their modified forms, produced by using ultrasound.

This year, South Ural State University has been included in THE Engineering & Technology Rankings table by subject for the first time. It has taken place in the interval group of 601-800 among more than 900 universities of the world that train specialists in the field of automation, control systems, construction, electrical engineering, power engineering, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, etc.
A delegation from Mount St. Mary’s University, Maryland, USA, consisting of 9 students and Associate Professor of Economics and Law of the Department of Business and Economics Michael Barry visited SUSU.
SUSU and Mount St. Mary’s University first started to collaborate in 2008, when the first delegation of students arrived on a friendly visit to participate in SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) games.
