Within Project 5-100 SUSU is fulfilling a program of enhancing the university's competitiveness on the global stage. Under the program on attracting young scientists, Doctor Bagale Uday Dasharath, who is a senior research fellow at the Department of Food Technology and Biotechnology, has joined the team of the SUSU Synthesis and Analysis of Food Ingredients Laboratory. Currently he is working on stabilizing a nanoemulsion filled with biologically active curcumine, for further use in production of healthy food.
Unfortunately, the threat of the spread of Covid-19 has touched the Chelyabinsk Region. South Ural State University, like other Russian universities, is moving to online learning, during which classes will be held remotely. Environmental research is one of three strategic areas of scientific and educational activities of South Ural State University along with the digital industry and materials science. Scientists of SUSU in collaboration with colleagues from the Institute of Organic Chemistry named after N.D. Zelinsky Russian Academy of Sciences are working on the creation of new effective organic sensitizers that will facilitate the transition to environmentally friendly and resource-saving power engineering.

Professor of the Leoben University for Mining, Metallurgy, and Materials, Austria, Head of the Department of Metallurgy, Doctor of Sciences (Engineering) and author of 420 scientific publications Johannes Schenk visited South Ural State University. Dr. Schenk is an Executive Technical Officer of a big Austrian Competence Centre dealing with innovation developments in technological and manufacturing processes for European metallurgical companies. He delivered a lecture on possibilities and prospects of research in modern metallurgical sector for the SUSU staff and postgraduates.
This academic year, SUSU Department of Russian and International History of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities has turned a new page in its chronicles. To fulfil the competitive growth program, a project for elite training of students was organised. Aiming at individual approach in learning and diving into the world of science, this project will allow the future graduates of the university to lay the foundation for personal and professional development and increase the chances for successful career after graduation.
International students of South Ural State University take part in friendly futsal games on a weekly basis.
The idea of conducting futsal training sessions appeared in December 2019. A big request for the organization of football games came from students. Then the SUSU International Office jointly with the Association of International Students found a special venue, on which training games began to be held every week on Saturdays and Sundays.
The International Education exhibition is a large event dedicated to developing international partnerships in education and presenting young people with an opportunity to earn quality education abroad.
To increase the number of international students from Central Asia, the International Student Support specialist from the SUSU International Office Viktoriya Pentegova participated in the exhibition in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The exhibition gathered more than two thousand participants.
The RAEX rating agency begins preparing the ninth annual ranking of Russia's 100 best universities as of 2020, as well as subject-related university rankings (Mathematics; Physics; Economics and Management). The purpose of the research is the creation of an independent system for assessing universities based on statistical data and the results of surveys of target groups.
Students of South Ural State University took part in the International Championship on Technological Strategy Metal Cup 2020. Gold Season. This championship provides an opportunity to test oneself in solving real production problems and get to know the future employers.
The finals of the contest of projects/ideas on the topic “How to Make the World a Better Place” within the framework of multi-day “IT-Maslenitsa” event was held on February 28th. Historically, Maslenitsa has been famous for its various contests, but nowadays, in the age of information technology, these competitions have been greatly modified. The aim of the contest is to unleash the potential of youth and boost new ideas and projects, which can make the world a better place!
Students of the Institute of Law of South Ural State University took part in the International Forum “Criminal Science and Forensic Enquiry in the Age of Digitalization” dedicated to the day of forensic experts of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. The student forum was held in a popular science format.
In February 2020, the Winter School of History Faculties of Chelyabinsk universities started. Head of the Department of Russian and International History at the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities of South Ural State University Olga Nikonova told Chelyabinsk students about Master's programmes and conducted a master class on the design of historical research.
The Head of the SUSU Academic Writing Office Evgeniya Khabirova took part in an internship at the Academic Writing Centre at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow. The internship lasted for 2 weeks (February 17th through 29th, 2020) and was aimed at providing new professional skills in the development of academic literacy among university staff within the SUSU Academic Writing Office.

The final round of the Technocup Annual Olympiad in Programming for the 8th- to 11th-form students was held at South Ural State University on March 1.
The Olympiad is being held since the 2015/2016 academic year, and Mail.Ru Group is its permanent organizer. According to Viktor Mamin, Deputy Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region, the Technocup Olympiad is the first joint project of Mail.Ru Group, SUSU and general-education institutions of the Chelyabinsk Region.
