Learn to Teach: SUSU Has a Student Mentoring System

Friends from senior classes will help first-year students adapt to the rules of the university.

The SUSU Student Mentoring System is aimed at helping and supporting first-year students who are just beginning to get used to life at a large university.

"Mentors are special students who meet first-year students and work with them throughout the year. They help them not only adapt, but also join student councils and associations. They also conduct mentoring hours, helping solve various problems," says Dariia Imankulova, Head of the Student Mentoring System.

Of course, in addition to student assistants, first-year students also have tutor-curators. What is the difference between them?

"Teachers are more involved in discipline and academic activities, and students are friends who are on the same page with you. Student mentors are more responsible for extracurricular activities," answers Dariia Imankulova.

To become a student mentor, you need to come to the annual event "School of Mentors" in August. The future mentor must submit an application, pass an interview and write a test. Then undergo training for 10 days, where he or she will learn about all the opportunities of SUSU, participate in trainings on communication skills. In 2024, the SUSU Student Mentoring System has received 200 applications for the status of a mentor!

By the way, in 2019, the SUSU Student Mentoring System had become the best mentoring and tutoring system in Russia, and last year the guys were among the organizers of the regional mentoring project!

This year, the students have won a grant covering all activities of the Student Mentoring System. Its first "goodie" is branded merch for all participants. Now the entire university will definitely recognize these guys!
