SBER Top Manager Reveals Risk Management Secrets to SUSU Students

On March 5th, Senior Managing Director, Head of the Risks Block of PAO Sberbank Dzhangir Dzhangirov spoke to students and teachers at South Ural State University. The topic of the lecture was Risk Management.

Risks surround a person everywhere, so it is necessary to assess them and prevent negative consequences not only in the financial, but also in almost any area of human or organizational activity. However, for banks as organizations working with a large volume of financial instruments with individuals and legal entities, this problem is especially relevant. Modern technologies and a scientific approach help to process "big data" and build optimal work strategies.

Since 2018, SBER has been using neural networks to assess risks. Millions of requests are processed. On average, decisions on loans to individuals are made in 30 seconds. The "Credit Machine" uses more than 140 models, providing for 35 decision-making strategies, 3−4 times a day or 1440 times a year, the strategies are adjusted to ensure that decisions are optimal.

"The purpose of such meetings is to tell young people what risk is. Wherever they will work later, this knowledge can be useful for the career development of a future employee and for increasing the efficiency of his company as a whole," explained Dzhangir Dzhangirov. "People often do not realize what an exciting field risk management is, and perhaps those who have not yet decided on their career path will become interested in our profession."

The speaker suggested holding the meeting in the format of a discussion, and the students and teachers present in the hall asked Dzhangir a huge number of questions. Topics discussed included the impact of the pandemic and foreign sanctions on the financial sector, the "black swan" problem, the risks of global warming, and other strategic threats.

Dzhangir Dzhangirov gave many analogies and explained to the audience, using simple practical examples, that each of us manages risks in our lives (even unconsciously). For example, choosing a route and time of arrival at the airport depending on the flight parameters or a rational approach to packing a backpack for a hiking trip. The speaker also talked about probabilistic models, working with big data, ESG risks and the fact that many in his team received a mathematical or technical education at leading universities in Russia.

The lecture by the SBER top manager aroused great interest among the audience: there was not a single empty seat in the hall, and the young people took an active part in the conversation. The students who asked the most interesting questions received memorable gifts from the speaker.

SBER is one of the key partners of SUSU, with whom the university develops fruitful cooperation in various fields. In 2024, with the participation of the Government of the Chelyabinsk Region, School 21 was opened at our university − an educational project of SBER aimed at training highly qualified specialists for the IT industry.
