Higher School Teachers’ Day Is Celebrated in Russia

Higher School Teachers’ Day is celebrated this year for the fourth time. It was established on November 19, 2021 following a decree by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

This new professional holiday was proposed by our country’s President in order to make the profession of a higher school teacher more prestigious. This would give the teaching staff at universities a status more suitable to their role, as well as would boost young people’s interest in this profession and increase the influx of staff to the scientific and research environment.

The date for this holiday was chosen to commemorate the birthday of a great Russian scientist and educator, one of the founders of Russian education and creator of the Moscow State University, Mikhail Lomonosov. He not only made a huge contribution to the development of natural sciences, but also stood up for the right for obtaining of education for people of all social categories.

In addition, this professional holiday was established in the Year of Science and Technologies, preceding the Year of Teachers and Mentors. This fact once again points out the value of the work of teachers and universities in fostering young people and developing our country.

Today, among those who celebrate this holiday are more than 253 thousand teachers and professors of Russian universities.
