Every year on November 11th an important holiday, Energy Saving Day, is celebrated all around the world. It was established in 2008 following the initiative of the International School Project on Application of Resources and Energy international ecological network. Deputy Director for Power Engineering Subdivision of the Institute of Engineering and Technology of South Ural State University Anton Bychkov explains the importance of power engineering in the life of modern people and shares life hacks on the rational use of energy.
The main goal of this celebration is to draw attention of government authorities and public to rational use of resources and development of renewable energy sources. So, what is power engineering?
“Power engineering is like blood circulatory system that first and foremost threads through industry, and also provides us with all the blessings of civilization. We may say that this is one of primary needs for modern human beings. Therefore, not only our welfare, but also the environment quality depend on the rational use of electrical energy,” notes Anton Bychkov.
The issue of energy saving is topical for the whole world since it is related to global problems. Energy conservation allows to save resources, reduce costs, as well as lessen the negative effect on nature.
“Energy saving is important for two main reasons. First, any rational consumption improves the quality of life, that is, we can pay less for the resources we consume. Second, if we use electrical energy in a rational way, this will reduce the impact on the environment and will help improve the ecology on our planet.”
The implementation and use of energy-saving technologies in the activity of enterprises and in the life of every single person is one of the crucial steps towards solving the global ecological problems, such as climate change, atmospheric pollution, depletion of resources, and many others. Each person can make a contribution to the preservation of environment if we use these pieces of advice from the expert:
“The easiest thing are light bulbs. LED light bulbs, which people started using several dozen years ago, help save electric energy considerably. Secondly, any device plugged into a socket consumes a certain amount of energy. There is such a term as “idle running”: for example, when a phone charge is not in use and is left plugged in the socket, it will still be consuming energy. The amount, of course, is minimum, but over a month or a year the amount of wasted energy will be significant. It is also important to rationally use electrical appliances: for example, when you leave your office, unplug the water cooler. In addition, if possible, try using outdated electrical appliances less.”
Energy Saving Day is a good reminder that we should put more thought into how we can save energy in our everyday lives. If you enrol in Power Engineering programmes at South Ural State University, you will be able to make your own contribution to preservation of natural resources and improvement of the ecological situation.
