On November 23–24, a Regional Student Science-to-practice Conference on the Countries of the Korean Peninsula: the Past and the Present was held in Irkutsk.
Irkutsk State University and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Russia acted as the event organizers. SUSU student Sofiia Repina, majoring in History, presented her report on the Image of the Korean War as Covered by the Soviet Periodicals, on the Example of Ogoniok Magazine in 1950-1953.
“Such conferences are an inspiration for the participants as those leave wide room for creativity. It was fascinating to interact with people of totally different majors and programmes. You can learn a lot of new things thanks to that. I’m very happy that I could take part in an event like this. This is an important step for me on the path towards my self-fulfilment as a historian,” shared Sofiia Repina.
The historic re-enactment of the dynamics of intercultural communication is an important part in the work of historians. In 2023, people will celebrate the 70th anniversary since the ending of the Korean War, the results of which even today influence many of the processes happening in the Korean Peninsula in particular, and in the Asia-Pacific Region in general. The report described how the events of the Korean War in 1950-1953 had been covered in the Soviet printed editions, on the example of Ogoniok magazine. Having used the quantitative and qualitative content analysis and other methods of working with texts and visual information, the reporter unveiled the specifics of shaping the image of those events in the Soviet print media.
