Institute of Engineering and Technology of SUSU Invites to English-Taught Master’s Program

South Ural State University (SUSU) is a huge (30000 students) multinational university which has been consistently ranked as one of the top Russian universities in national and international rankings. Two areas of education – Physical Sciences and Engineering and Technology - are in the THE University Ranking by Subject 2020. Every year students from different countries choose SUSU for getting their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. There are lots of educational programs both in Russian and English languages.

Industrial Thermal Power Engineering Department of the Institute of Engineering and Technology has launched a new Master’s program Heat and Power Engineering taught in English which trains specialists in the field of thermal power for the oil and gas industry.

Our Master’s Program is in demand in China where the climate is similar to Russia in the northern part of the country, and in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa which need cold supply, air conditioning and ventilation at high temperatures. Moreover, the program is closely related to the fuel and energy industry, the gas and oil supply, as well as to renewable sources of energy - sun, wind, and thermal power of the soil,” shares Konstantin Osintsev, the Program Coordinator. “You can get all the necessary information about the program on the official site which was developed by SUSU specialists while working under the grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in December 2019”.

The Benefits of the Program

In the course of the program future specialists get deep knowledge in theory and practical application of heat and mass transfer, recuperators, regenerators, systems, devices for transporting liquids and gases, heating, cooling, ventilation, air conditioning, equipment of thermal power plants, boiler units operating on all types of organic fuel, steam and gas turbines, as well as some of the applications of these systems and their features in various industrial enterprises. These systems are in high demand in ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy enterprises, mechanical engineering, chemical, oil, and gas industries. The main major subjects are Heat and Mass Exchangers and Cooling and Refrigerating Systems.

The dedicated and highly qualified staff supervises students following their areas of expertise and is engaged in building new knowledge in collaboration with professors from the University of Oxford, Cornell University, Tsinghua University, KAIST, University of California Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. SUSU entrepreneurial culture as well as constant drive for technological advances help them maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with the World’s famous industrial leaders, such as Emerson, Kaspersky, Samsung, Siemens.

Project-Based Learning

The goal of the program is to prepare students for industry. The keywords to describe the professors’ approach to teaching are interdisciplinarity, hands-on experience, and project-based learning. Project-based learning means either solution of a relevant problem or project development for a specific industrial partner. The students and staff are involved in both: product development projects, which could be used in business sooner or later, along with the power engineering solutions developed to meet the demands of either industrial or municipal authorities.

The currently running several projects are funded by either industrial segment companies, international funds, or by municipal authorities. The projects are intended to optimize the efficiency of giant wind turbines, the development of energy-efficient heat power stations, the design of digital twins for electric drives, the perfection of the sustainable infrastructure of smart city, and much more.

At the university there is a solid platform for practically oriented experimental work in cutting-edge research laboratories involving international expertise and allowing the university to meet the unique needs of the local community as well as to benefit society in general. The laboratories are the following:

  • SUSU supercomputer lab, considered to be the 11th most powerful supercomputer lab of the CIS countries;
  • EMERSON Delta-V Plantweb lab, - a distributed control system, launched by SUSU in cooperation with EMERSON in 2011;
  • International Center for Renewable Energy - a center of excellence for cutting-edge research work in renewable energy.

Prospects of Employment

The skills and knowledge gained at SUSU will be highly appreciated in various sectors of oil and gas industries, industrial power plants, construction industry. The recognized employers are the Grundfos, Wilo, Viesmann, Buderus, Bosch, Siemens, Fortum, Emerson, the Chinese Energy Company, and the Iraqi Oil Company. The university staff offers support and opportunities to find a good job and also organises Job Fairs 3 times a year.

Nowadays there are 15 graduates of the program who at the same time get Master’s degrees at the North China Electric Power University.
