Also a student can choose a Bachelor’s or Master’s program taught in English. The university is multinational and nowadays is a home for more than 2,300 international students from 52 countries.
One of the international students is Serageldin Khalifa Belkassem Awad Benshetwan from Libya. He chose SUSU to get his Bachelor’s Degree in Power Engineering. We asked him some questions about life and study in Russia.
- Why did you choose Russia to study?
- Actually I chose Russia to study due to several reasons, firstly the terms of application to Russian universities are not as complicated as to universities in other countries. For example, you don't need to have a certificate of language proficiency before you arrive, but you can study the language in a preparatory course in their universities. Secondly, the ranking of the Russian universities is very high and they are constantly mentioned in QS and THE ranking.
- How did your family feel about your moving to another country?
- Well, my family didn't complain about my moving to another country. The only thing they were worried about was how I would learn the Russian language and communicate with people. But in my opinion it was not a big deal!
- How did you get into university? Say some words about your experience.
- From the very beginning, I registered for a preparatory course at Astrakhan State Technical University. Unfortunately I studied there only for 3 months due to coronavirus quarantine, and I continued my Russian studies individually. Then I registered at South Ural State University as it has a good ranking. I got a tutor who helped me with all the paperwork I needed.
- Is the local climate suitable for you? How do you stand Russian winter?
- Frankly speaking, it was not easy, but I managed to cope with it.
- What kind of science do you work in? Why did you choose that?
- I was always a good student in Physics, so when it was time to choose a future profession I started looking for different programmes connected with Physics.
- Is it possible to be fully engaged in science?
- Of course, yes. But don’t forget that any serious research needs much effort. So if you are not ready to spend time and read a lot of books, then no excellent equipment can help you to become a true scientist.
- Do you take part in any student club?
- I was invited to the Association of International Students and Alumni to take part in different events for international students and it was enjoyable and entertaining.
- What do you advise an applicant who only chooses a university in Russia?
- I advise all applicants to learn Russian as much as they can, in order not to face problems while dealing with the lecturers.
