For more than 20 years now, the Philology programme has been taught at the Department of the Russian Language and Literature of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities.

The education in Philology is traditionally considered to be a base education training high personal culture and ensuring a wide range of professional application. Those who master a Philology specified programme gain the skills of verbal and socio-cultural communication, are ready for creative professional activity in scientific and teaching teams, in institutions of education, culture, management, mass media, and other institutions organizing the social and humanities activity.

The Department of the Russian Language and Literature of the SUSU Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities invites to study in Master's degree programme 45.04.01 Philology, major in Text Creation, Analysis and Expert Review.

This year 13 state-funded spots have been allocated for students.

The duration of studying in Master's degree programme is two years. Over this period of time students learn languages (native and foreign) in their theoretical and practical application, works of literature in historical and theoretical aspects, and find out how to compile various types of texts (written, oral, virtual, including hypertext and text elements of multimedia objects).

The department associate professors, holders of a special license, teach Master's degree students the basics of such currently in-demand activity as linguistic examination.

At the Department of the Russian Language and Literature Master's degree programme is implemented using the project-based learning technology. Master's degree students create a website called Virtual Museum of South Ural Writers, which can be a sound replacement for a literary museum as our region does not have one. Thus, the department's Master's degree students are not only obtaining higher education in Philology, but are also creating a significant and socially important project.

Working on the website, the department's Master's degree students refine their mastership in Philology, write biographical materials and literary essays, as well as gain knowledge relevant in this digital epoch.

The science of Philology did not get lost in the centuries-long history of the civilization as it has always had the flexibility and the ability to adapt to the demands of time. Today we see active developments of such field as digital philology, where text is studied with the help of special computer programs, and methods of artificial intelligence. Such research is conducted at the Laboratory of Digital Philology created at the SUSU Department of the Russian Language and Literature.

Master's degree Philology students are trained in Information Technology, Workshop of Internet Text, and Multimedia Technology in Applied Philology. Under the guidance by Candidate of Sciences (Philology), Associate Professor Evgeny Smyshlyaev, Master's degree students learn various methods of computer processing of text, data visualization, and network analysis of text. "In our classes, with the use of modern GIS technology, we analyze the interrelations between literary texts and the space of our region. Resulting from that are the publications in world scientific journals. Another important element of training is that Master's degree students gain certain designer competences: skills of photo processing and retouching, of logo creating in Adobe Illustrator, and visual styling of content for social networks," says Evgeny Smyshlyaev.

To enrol in Master's degree programme to major in Text Creation, Analysis and Expert Review, applicants will need to take an integrated examination which tests several types of skills. The examination includes the completion of a written task on text editing and analysis, and an oral commenting of the performed task.
