On April 7th and 8th, the traditional Blood Donor Day event was held at South Ural State University. For two days, SUSU students, academic and administrative staff donated 30.15 litres of the most important component of the internal environment of the body for the regional blood bank. A total of 67 people took part in the event.
The Blood Donor Day at South Ural State University is a traditional event that takes place every spring and autumn. According to the Head of the SUSU Volunteer Centre Polina Patrusheva, there is never a shortage of donors at the university.
"In order to reduce the number of cases when a person is denied to donate blood for medical and other reasons, we are doing a lot of information work. In social networking groups, we tell people who can become a donor, what the contraindications for donating blood are, and what the recommendations before and after donation are," says Polina Patrusheva.
The girl herself has become a blood donor for the first time this year. She admits that she felt nervous on the eve of the procedure, as she was afraid that she would feel bad during the donation, but everything went well.
"I was the one of the first people who donated blood in the morning. Now I continue to work. Each donor has a right to take two days off, but I will not take them, I feel great," says Polina.
According to Ksenia Gernega, Director of the SUSU Centre for the Prevention of Antisocial Behaviour, donors should understand that their help does not end with the donation day.
"Perhaps not everyone knows that only erythrocytes will be used immediately from the blood donated today. And plasma, which is the main carrier of all pathogens, is sent to quarantine for six months. Six months later, the staff of the Blood Transfusion Station will call you and ask you to come for a second laboratory examination, after which the plasma can be given for transfusion. Therefore, I urge everyone to fulfil their civic duty to the end, be sure to answer the doctors' call and come in six months for the examination," says Kseniia Gernega.
Blood is a unique organic material that human science has not yet learned to produce artificially. The only source of blood is a donor.
"The situation with blood is always changing: today there is a shortage of the O+ blood group, tomorrow the AB- blood group is needed, so any blood is needed, it is always needed," says Tatiana Sergeeva, Head of the Donor Staffing Department at the Blood Transfusion Station of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency. "The most common group is the A+ blood group, but this does not mean that there is always enough of it, because if it is the most common, the number of people who need it is just as big."
According to a health worker, due to the pandemic, the number of donors has decreased, despite the fact that the station was operating normally. Also, during the quarantine period, there were no off-site campaigns that are customary to townspeople. There is no need to wait for off-site events, you can donate blood on any weekday by visiting the Blood Transfusion Station of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency of Russia in Chelyabinsk at the address: 51 Vorovskogo Street, Dovatora bus stop. Donor registration takes place from 8:00 to 11:00.
