SUSU Indian Student Tells about His Learning Experience

South Ural State University is one of the leading Russian multidisciplinary universities with the fundamental scientific basis and high standards of specialist training. The university is multinational and nowadays is a home for more than 2,500 international students from 58 countries.

Upasak Bose came to Russia from India to get his Master’s degree in Economics and after successful graduation decided to continue his studying at South Ural State University. Now he is a student of Russian Language Preparatory Program, and in summer he is going to start his PhD in Economics.

Our international student agreed to answer some questions.

- Why did you choose to study in Chelyabinsk?

- I chose Chelyabinsk because I wanted to feel the true vibe of Russia being in a city with fewer crowds and now I believe that I made the right decision. Chelyabinsk in itself is an industrial city with an intense typical Russian feel. Needless to say that I enjoyed my stay here so much for the two years of my Master Program that I decided to continue my PhD from the same city and the same university. People here are extremely humble, generous and kind. Regarding SUSU, it is justifiably one of the best universities in Russia and its atmosphere makes any foreigner feel at home. The International Office is extremely helpful and always ready to help students in any kind of situation.

- What do you remember most about your study? What subjects are your favorite ones?

- Two years of Master Degree Program has been a wonderful experience. All of my teachers were extremely helpful and gentle. In class they used to give us live examples and case studies to solve. There were regular workshops and practice classes so that students could develop individual problem solving capabilities and intellect to tackle real live scenarios. I would like to say that Pedagogy, Methods of Carrying out Scientific Research and Philosophy were of special interest because they will help me in my future plans of teaching and research. I am grateful to SUSU for including these special subjects in the Master Degree Program.

- How do you plan to use your education in future?

- I have a varied and diversified educational background. I completed my Bachelor Degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and did my Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Accounting and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in India before arriving to Russia. Then I completed my Master of Economics from SUSU. Even though I had worked in the corporate industry as a system engineer and a business analyst for five years, my objective was to switch my career to academics and research. I came to Russia with this aim. Now I feel pretty confident, that after completion my PhD at SUSU, I will be able to immerse in the areas of teaching and academic research.

- What was your first impression about South Ural State University?

- My first impression about SUSU was 100% positive. The system of volunteering where Russian students help foreigners to get from the airport to the university, fill out all papers at the university and hostel, visa extension, medical tests and with adaptation. I had never seen such a concept before in my life and was really amazed at the kind and humble attitude of Russian students. Also SUSU has Association of International Students and Alumni (AISA) where I am a member now. The association looks after all the requirements of international students including arranging various kinds of cultural activities and programs.

University staff and faculty are one of the best I have had in my entire lifetime and working with them makes work turn into pleasure and fun. Overall I would like to say that choosing Russia, Chelyabinsk and SUSU had been one of the best decisions of my life and I enjoy every moment out here.

- Do you take part in student life (volunteer center, School of young leaders, sport clubs, dance clubs, choir)?

- I’ve always been keen about extracurricular activities all my life and I took an active part in events and programs organized by AISA: I was an organizer of national Indian festivals and cooked my native dishes for Russians and foreigners, with two my colleagues from AISA I start English Speaking Club where Russians and foreigners can speak English to improve their English speaking skills. Other than that, I am also involved in some other organizations in Chelyabinsk related to writing stories and poetry and some other debate clubs.

- What perspectives does a specialist with Russian diploma have in your country? Do you plan to come back home after graduation or do you want to stay and work in Russia?

- A Russian diploma will definitely help me land a good job in my country but truly speaking that is not my plan. I came to Russia not just to get a degree but more because I am in love with this country and its culture. I would definitely like to continue my career in Russia and especially at SUSU because it has become my home now.

- Why do many universities try to attract international students for studying?

- International students come from different cultural backgrounds and bring different experiences. A multicultural environment generates new ideas which can help the country to grow economically, academically and financially.

- What would you wish your compatriots who are choosing a university now?

- I wish my compatriots luck with their education. I would advise them to study hard and bring glory to themselves and their country. At the same time, I would suggest them to be respectful to the culture, values and culture of the country they are currently residing in. When they are in a foreign country, it is very important that they respect that country’s people and culture and love the country like their own.
