SUSU Busts the Myth that "According to Statistics, There Are Nine Guys for Every Ten Girls"

On the occasion of the International Women's Day, interesting statistics were prepared at South Ural State University, according to which it was found out how many women study and work at the university, and what names the female staff of the university have.

Judging by the figures, only 9976 students out of 24272 are women. So, SUSU girls always get a certain amount of male attention. According to other statistics, there are 2732 women among 4736 employees of the university.

The most popular name among female students is Anastasiia. There are 946 female students at SUSU with this name of Greek origin, meaning "resurrection". The name Ekaterina is in second place (679 people). The third most popular name is Daria. 543 Darias study at the university. Among the Top 10 names are also Anna (494), Iuliia (382), Mariia (354), Kseniia (355), Elena (293), Tatiana (272) and Viktoriia (271). The one-letter name was recognized as the most unusual one. Two people have the name of E.

In addition, it turned out that among the university staff, four men were born on International Women's Day. They unanimously agreed that being born on such a day, when it is officially a day off, is wonderful.

Engineering Technician of the 1st category of the SUSU Recreation Centre Igor Grishin says:

"Birthday can fall on any day, but I was lucky and I was born on the day when the whole country is officially resting, so this is an obvious advantage. Traditionally, I celebrate my birthday in the family circle. I have been working at the university for 20 years now, and every year on March 8th we hold a festive event for our women: before, these were classical concerts with artists invited from the Philharmonic Society; the last few years − performances and concerts with the participation of the university staff. I want to congratulate my female colleagues on this holiday of spring and beauty, on International Women's Day, and wish them love, harmony in the family, and success in their work."

Associate Professor at the Department of Automotive Engineering, Candidate of Sciences (Engineering) Nikolai Goriaev says:

"I was born on March 8, 1966, when in accordance with the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, International Women's Day became not only a holiday, but also a non-working day. In this regard, there is a comic story in our family that in connection with my birth this day became an official day off. When I got married, my mother said that the time had come when the March 8th holiday returned to her life. I remember when I was a postgraduate student in Kiev, an orienteering relay race was always carried out that day, and, what is interesting, women were always the first to run and men were the second. The relay exchange was in the form of presenting a gift. Today my son and I jointly congratulate women on this holiday. He is engaged in an art circle and usually prepares hand-made gifts for this day. I congratulate women colleagues on the International Women's Day and wish them love − to love and be loved!"

"Of course, I have been happy to have my birthday on a day off since I was a child. There is no need to go anywhere, everyone is at home. But one of the drawbacks is the inability to celebrate it with my colleagues, when the birthday falls on a holiday. You have to celebrate it earlier, which is not very good. A pleasant economic bonus for our family is that, as a birthday person, I get a discount at restaurants this day, so my wife has a holiday with a small discount, and my birthday is with a small discount as well. As for the peculiarity of being born on the holiday, I want to say that we were all born on some kind of holiday. For example, my wife's birthday is October 31st, on Halloween, some consider this to be a significant day too. The most interesting thing, in my opinion, is that two gender-related holidays − February 23rd and March 8th − are celebrated with the same time interval as the difference between the old calendar and the new, Julian and Gregorian ones. Therefore, it is often said that we all celebrate February 23rd on March 8th according to the old style. I wish all women a spring mood and good spring weather," says Aleksei Chudakov, Associate Professor of the Department of Nanoscale Systems Physics, Candidate of Sciences (Physics and Mathematics).
