Samsung Announces the Winners of the Samsung IT Academy Interuniversity Student Project Competition

Samsung Electronics held the final round of the third annual interuniversity project competition for graduates of the Samsung IT Academy academic programmes. Third place in the category "Internet of Things" was taken by Maksim Barannikov, a graduate of South Ural State University, with the project "Diagnostics of Automated Electric Drive".

Graduates of the 2019-2020 academic year from 19 of the project’s partner-universities participated in the key event. In the final round, which was held online, 15 of the best projects from 7 Russian universities were determined: MIREA - Russian Technological University, Moscow; Novosibirsk State Technical University, Novosibirsk; North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk, Yakutsk; St Petersburg University, Saint Petersburg; Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg; SUSU, Chelyabinsk; and Southern Federal University, Rostov-on-Don. The contest was held in three categories matching the academic tracks of the Samsung IT Academy project: Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and Mobile Development.

“My project is called “Diagnostics of Automated Electric Drives Using IoT Technologies”. I offered a solution on how to improve the process of analyzing data and completing diagnostics for various electric drives. I worked on this project throughout the second semester and finalized it right up to the final round. My research advisers were Evgeniy Kanashev (senior lecturer of the SUSU Department of Automation and Control) and Aleksandr Nesterov (Candidate of Sciences (Engineering), Associate Professor of the SUSU Department of Automated Electric Drive). They helped me a lot and supported me while I worked on my project. The university gave me many opportunities which I tried to use to the fullest during my education: additional courses, participation in scientific conferences, and writing articles,” said Maksim Barannikov.

Evgeniy Kanashev, senior lecturer of the SUSU Department of Automation and Control:

“Maxim Barannikov's project can be safely categorized as a retrofit ‑ adding a new technology or its properties to older systems. Electric drives today are, perhaps, the main way to get mechanical movement in production, transport, in everyday life, and, unfortunately, they occasionally fail, what leads to downtime and losses. And if this happens suddenly, the problems accumulate quickly like a snowball. The project "Diagnostics of Automated Electric Drives Using IoT Technologies" makes it possible to predict the failure of equipment on the basis of indirect signs, to plan its repair in advance, and thus to significantly reduce the downtime costs. Of course, in modern automation systems such solutions are standard practice, but today there are millions of drives for various purposes in operation, where implementing such solutions can help achieve significant economic benefits. Overall, of course, we are glad that SUSU is among the finalists of the Samsung IT Academy for the second year in a row. In other words, the ideas of our graduates are competitive, and the work itself is performed at a high level!”

The winners were chosen by a jury which included experts from Samsung and other leading companies in the IT industry. Projects were evaluated by several criteria: idea, technical implementation, and presentation. The parameters of evaluation of technical implementation were the software (elaboration of the program, programming style, graphical interface) and the engineering component (elaboration of the prototype, engineering execution culture, design). The idea was evaluated in terms of novelty and originality, practical applicability, as well as the depth of study of business aspects.

All projects of graduates of the Samsung IT Academy are of practical significance. They included devices for smart homes; solutions for monitoring human activity; solutions for the automatic detection of emotions and recognizing whether or not an individual is wearing a mask; games; and even an online cosmetics bag.
