Why Do Students from Turkmenistan Choose SUSU?

South Ural State University is one of the leading Russian multidisciplinary universities with the fundamental scientific basis and high standards of specialist training. The university is multinational and nowadays is a home for more than 2,300 international students from 56 countries.

Gulnara Khodzhieva, a SUSU student from Turkmenistan, shares her impressions on living and studying in Chelyabinsk.

- Why do you like Russia, Chelyabinsk and SUSU?

- I can say that Russia is my land of opportunities! Here I have found myself. In Chelyabinsk, and SUSU in particular I can put all my ideas and projects in practice by working in Association of International Students.

- What do you remember most about your study? What subjects are your favourite ones?

- My favorite subjects are Russian language subjects with the best teacher Roza Panova. I remember every lesson. Roza Safagalievna is always willing to help her students. She saw that it wasn’t easy for us, international students, to get knowledge and she supported and tried to help us all the time. Most teachers treat us this way and it gives us more motivation to study well and to live up the expectations of our teachers.

- How do you plan to use your education in future?

- I dream of working with international students because we know better than anyone what difficulties foreign students are going through and what support they need. My learning experience in Russia gives me the understanding and power to explain.

- What was your greatest challenge about living in Russia?

- The hardest challenger is meeting and communicating because when you come to a foreign country you don’t know all aspects and features of life. You’d better meet people and students who have experience of living and studying in the country. This will make it much easier for you to get used to new conditions.

- What was your first impression about South Ural State University?

- For the first time I saw a huge and beautiful main building of SUSU on the cover of the guide for applicants (where there was all the information about the majors and the university as a whole). I could not believe that I would study here. For five years now I am very happy and proud every time I enter the main building of my beloved university.

- Did you get any help from your compatriots having arrived to Chelyabinsk earlier than you?

- Of course, though there were few students at the time of my entering to SUSU their help was priceless. And now when there are 83 students from Turkmenistan we have formed our association of Turkmen students to help and support each other.

- Did Association of International Students and Center for Sociocultural Adaptation assist in any questions?

- AIS and CSA are the second family for all international students and I’m grateful to the leaders of these communities for their help that is given from the first days of an international student’s stay in Chelyabinsk.

- What is the topic of your thesis?

- Now I am a first year student getting my Master’s degree in Philology and the topic of my thesis is the construction of ontology-based terminological fields on a subject-matter basis of non-physical values.

 - Why do many universities try to attract international students for studying?

- In my view a university provides an opportunity to stand together for anyone who wants to get knowledge in spite of his differences in nationality, color of skin or culture. People have different opinions on the same question and when they discuss the topic with representatives from different cultural and national groups, the topic becomes broader and more advanced. That’s why universities try to create multicultural environment.

- Do you keep in touch with your compatriots who got SUSU degree? Where do they work?

- Graduates of SUSU from Turkmenistan work in different fields. As an example I can name a Computer Science teacher, a PE teacher, a doctor, an airport employee and an economist. A person who has got a diploma of a Russian university will easily find a job in his field and become a highly qualified specialist.

- What would you wish your compatriots who are choosing a university now?

- I wish my compatriots to choose South Ural State University because here they will get quality education and precious student experience.
