Department of the Russian Language and Literature Celebrates Philologist Day

Philologist Day, a professional holiday for those who work with a word, is celebrated in Russia today.

This academic year has turned out to be fruitful and eventful for the graduates of the Department of the Russian Language and Literature: traditional visits to the theatre and book fairs, literary evenings and festivals, participation in conferences and writing final qualification works.

The second semester gave students and teachers an unusual opportunity to try online learning during self-isolation, with the help of Electronic SUSU. In a rather short period of time the Department launched two promising projects: the Divan website began to work under the supervision of the Candidate of Sciences (Philology), teacher Evgenii Smyshliaev; the project of two students, that is the website and the Instagram page of the InVersiya festival, has been launched under the guidance of Doctor of Sciences (Philology), Professor Natalia Zykhovskaia.

Philology is one of the oldest sciences, which has determined the basis for different fields of humanitarian activity. Therefore, a philologist is a deeply educated polymath who knows several languages, world literature and culture, knows how to create different types of texts and apply them in a wide field of activities. At present, philology brings together linguists, literary critics, teachers of language and literature, librarians, translators, philologists and representatives of many other relevant professions whose work is connected with the study of the textual culture.

The Department of the Russian Language and Literature of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities traditionally holds “In the Beginning Was the Word” intellectual quiz, dedicated to the professional holiday, as well as to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, which was celebrated not so long ago, on May 24. This year the quiz has been held online.

Denis Pelikhov, Candidate of Sciences (Philology), Associate Professor of the Department of the Russian Language and Literature prepared the most diverse questions for the online quiz, which could be found on the Vkontakte page of the Department under the hashtag #ДеньСлавянскойПисьменностиЮУрГУ (#SUSUDayofSlavicWriting) during the day.  All those interested, including people of different ages, from different parts of the world could take part in an intellectual tournament.

“Every year, our Department conducted an intellectual quiz in a in-person format: among the participants were second-year Bachelor's students of the Department of the Russian Language and Literature, who were most familiar with the subject of the Slavic writing, since throughout the academic year they study Old Slavonic and Polish, as well as historical grammar of the Russian language. However, practice has shown that the online format is relevant and has good feedback. Therefore, we plan to conduct a quiz next year in person and on the Internet,” shared his plans Denis Pelikhov.
