Mikhail Ivanov, Dean of the SUSU Faculty of Material Science and Metallurgical Technology, and students training under a project-based learning programme took part in the “Welding in Russia 2019: State-of-the-Art and Perspectives” International Conference, which was held at the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, Tomsk. South Ural State University was one of the conference organizers along with other big universities and industrial associations of Russia.
At the conference, Mikhail Ivanov made a plenary report on the Innovative Aspects of Design and Technological Optimization in Welded Joints of High-strength-steel Shipbuilding Constructions.
“The report presents the concept of using soft welding material instead of the equally efficient wire applied in designs like these. It was shown that the feasibility of the proposed replacement is explained by a decrease in the risk of cold cracking and, as a consequence, by a greater durability of soft joints,” shares Mikhail Ivanov.
The youth section meeting was attended by students Evgeny Kozyrev, Denis Derbenev and Mikhail Frolov, who are working on a project on the Weldability and Performance Assessment of Mechanically Heterogeneous Welded Joints of Hulls. The young men who participated in an international conference for the first time gave oral reports, confidently answered a number of questions, and gained invaluable experience of such presentations.
During the conference, participants exchanged views on the issues of the current state and prospects for the development of welding production in Russia, actively communicated with each other, which helped to strengthen ties between leading scientists and specialists in the field of welding, as well as employees of the Siberian Branch of the RAS. The program included a visit to the welding laboratories of the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of the Siberian Branch of the RAS.
The conference proceedings, in the form of articles in Russian, are planned to be published in the collection of reports and posted on the Russian Science Citation Index electronic scientific citation base platform in Elibrary. Separate articles may be recommended for publication in the journal IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) in English (indexed in Scopus scientific database).
