On the threshold of the 74th anniversary of Soviet people’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, a photo exhibition entitled “History of the Great Victory” opened at SUSU.
The purpose of the exhibition is to tell students about the Great Patriotic War and about contribution of Southern Urals’ residents to the Great Victory. The exposition exhibits historical photos from collections of law enforcement services and organizations of the Chelyabinsk region, as well as photos from personal collections of veterans of the Great Patriotic War, our compatriots.
The exhibition was opened by senior inspector of the Extracurricular Activities Department, retired Colonel Yury Meshkov.
“Today we are opening an exhibition that tells us about the history of our state, about the victory in the Great Patriotic War that has been achieved due to the efforts of those fighting on the front line as well as those working on the home front. We should remember about this and never forget about their heroic deed.”
Students learned about contribution made by the Chelyabinsk region to the Soviet people’s victory. The region had literally become the forge of victory by supplying the army with ammunition, military equipment and all the necessary. Every third missile fired at the enemy, just like armour of every second tank, was produced out of Magnitogorsk steel. Over the war years, ChTZ produced 18 thousand tanks and self-propelled artillery mounts. It is for a reason that the second non-official name of Chelyabinsk is Tankograd (the City of Tanks). Tens of military units and formations were formed at the region’s territory.
More than 1 million people were sent to the front during the war. 250 thousands of these people, every 4th of them, died on the battlefield. 263 people born in the Chelyabinsk region were awarded the distinguished title as the Hero of the Soviet Union; six of them were awarded this title twice; 57 people became the Full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory; about 100 of home front workers were awarded with a medal For the Valorous Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
“I really liked the exhibition; I think that similar exhibitions should be organised more often because everyone should know the history of our Motherland. It was especially interesting to listen to stories about heroism of soldiers, tankers and aviators from the Chelyabinsk region, who fought for our future,” said student of SUSU’s Institute of Law, Georgy Chkhikvadze.
History of the Great Victory photo exhibition is held by SUSU’s Extracurricular Activities Department several times a year within implementation of the Programme of civic and patriotic education of students.
