South Ural State University held a meeting devoted to two significant events, namely 100th anniversary of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League (AULYCL) and 50th anniversary of assigning Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute (nowadays SUSU) the name of Leninist Young Communist League.
This event gathered the AULYCL veterans and their successors – young volunteers of SUSU. The significance of communication between the representatives of youth communist league and members of SUSU student unions was noted by the Vice-Rector for Extra-Curricular Activities and Youth Policy Vyacheslav Burmatov:
“AULYCL is a movement which united millions of young boys and girls and has become a landmark. It inspired people and encouraged them to perform exploits. It served as a kind of support. We are really glad to talk to the League’s representatives. One can say that today SUSU has held the meeting of generations. Students can learn from such events and use this experience for the benefit of the University, Southern Urals and the whole country”.
The alumni of Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute who graduated at different times and made a contribution to the development of the Youth Communist League were present at the meeting. Among the guests was an honourable worker of the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Social Development Leonid Shusharin, who told about achievements of young communists in the university: winning places of CPI students in the Olympic Games, prestigious awards of the Theatre of Variety Miniatures (nowadays Maneken), the activity of students’ teams. The events organised by young communists to a large extent set up the traditions that exist today. 29 October 1968 became an important date for them. It was when the name of Leninist Young Communist League was assigned to CPI upon the recommendation of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League by the decision of the Ministry of Higher Education Institutions of USSR.
“This day was special for the staff of Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute. The young communist activity of the University continued to grow and develop, and it was one of the biggest in the Southern Urals. In the beginning of 1970s there were almost 11 000 members, and in the mid of 1980s their amount contained 12 800 people. The same year the CPI’s students research centre and the theatre “Maneken” were awarded the Leninist Young Communist League prize. I hope that experience that the Youth Communist League gained over the age-old history would be useful for both present-day non-profit organisations and students,” emphasized Leonid Shusharin.
The guests shared the stories of academic life in the second half of the last century with current students. In their turn, SUSU volunteers talked about the activity of youth organisations at the present day.
“The Joint Council of Students is the whole youth of our university. We consider ourselves as legal successors at the university level. We endeavour to involve all students in the extra-curricular activity, motivate their development in studies and science, cultivate love to the University and our country. The Joint Council of Students include student unions of each SUSU’s institution and school and 25 student organisations. Our activity includes such areas as labour unions, voluntary work, creative activities, sports, media, work with international students, etc.,” said a chairman of the Joint Council of Students at SUSU Viktor Froydenberger.
In the meeting, the chairman of the Fund “Budushchee Otechestva” (Future of the Motherland) named after V.Polyanichko Leonty Pabchenok presented SUSU his book entitled “The epoch of communist youth league. Stories in bibliography”. The meeting was held in a kind, family-like atmosphere, the participants sang songs and talked with students with great interest.
