A tea ceremony was held at South Ural State University on the occasion of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day.
On February 4, 2018 Sri Lanka celebrated a milestone date – 70 years of independence. Students from Sri Lanka who study at SUSU celebrate this holiday every year.
“We wanted to give Russian students a taste of Sri Lanka. They often invite us to come over and treat us to national dishes, and we appreciate that very much. In our turn we would also like to share our culture with them,” says student from Sri Lanka Uvindu Vidjeveera.
Students from Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia presented natural Ceylon tea and traditional treats to the event’s guests. The 1st year student of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities Elizaveta Zyryanova took part in this event and shared her emotions.
“I tasted the national treats. They differ from those we’re used to, but I still liked them. I think it’s important to organize such events as we can communicate with foreign students, exchange our cultural traditions and knowledge.”
Let us recall that in 1948 the Republic of Sri Lanka gained its independence, being reformed as the dominion Ceylon, and in 1972 the country was renamed Sri Lanka and was no longer a dominion, but remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Nonetheless, Sri Lanka, as former Ceylon, never stopped being famous for tea that is produced there.
