September 12-15th, in Seville (Spain), the 29th annual conference of the European Association for International Education (EAIE Conference and Exhibition) was held – a major event in the field of higher education in Europe. 19Russian institutions of higher education, participants of Project 5-100, including South Ural State University,presented Russian school of higher education at a joint nation-wide pavilion in the format of Study in Russia.
The EAIE conference was opened by Alexander Betts, University of Oxford Professor, Director of the Humanitarian Innovation Project.
In the course of booth demonstration of the University achievements and development prospects, the SUSU delegation under supervision of our University Rector, Doctor of Engineering Science, Professor, Alexander Shestakov, signed two agreements with the authoritative rating agency, THE – the agency head is planning to visit Chelyabinsk in November and as a matter of practice organize the process of the SUSU’s becoming member of theTHE rating.
Also, negotiations were held between SUSU and the representatives of Darmstadt University (Germany) regarding the expansion of collaboration in the field of research and education, what came as a result of a successful joint work of the SUSU physicists and German scientists, who are now very interested in collaboration in the digital industry sector.
On September 13th, a special Project 5-100 event was held within the framework of the conference: session “National Excellence Initiatives as Drivers of Internationalisation”. The main speakers were Luis Delgado, Deputy Director General of Modernization and Internationalization of Universities, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, and Farid Abdesselam, Director of the French National Research Agency.
The second day of working at the EAIE forum brought five new international collaboration agreements to the University, including an agreement with QS rating agency. QS World University Rankings is one of the most authoritative in its field. Besides the world rating, QS publishes ratings of universities functioning less than 50 years,of the best cities for students, national education systems; subject and sector ratings, as well as regional ones:“Arabic Region”, “Asia”, “Latin America”, “BRICS”, Emerging Europe and Central Asia, and rating of employment assistance to university graduates (QS Graduate Employability Ranking). The agreement signed with QS facilitates the solution of one of the major tasks set before SUSU as the Project 5-100 participant, and namely enabling recognition of our University at the international level.
Special role in the rating advancement of universities is played by educational exchange programs, which are successfully fulfilled at SUSU. The steps to further perfecting them became the signed agreement with the University of Seville, framework agreement with the University of Applied Sciences of Lithuania, as well as negotiations with the University of the Basque Country regarding collaboration in the fields of science and education.
Moreover, the South Ural State University delegation held successful negotiations with the Vice President of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Lourdes Reig Puig on scientific collaboration in the field of automation and control. Also, an agreement was signed with the Director of the Commission on Higher Education at the Philippines President’s Office, Lily F. Milla regarding development of the professional training programs in the field of engineering education.
“These international agreements help the South Ural State University’s practical strengthening of our relationships with partner universities, expanding our collaboration geography, developing joint educational programs and scientific research, as well as by attracting foreign students and specialists facilitating internationalisation of higher education, as defined by the tasks of Project 5-100,” noted Alexander Shestakov.
On the third day of work of the South Ural State University’s delegation several productive meetings were held at the forum between the delegation supervisor and the diplomatic corps of the leading foreign institutions of higher education.
In particular, the Rector met with Maria Esther Morel Garcia, Consul General of Andalusia, who was sincerely interested in the possibility of expanding the boundaries of international collaboration with SUSU. Also, in the course of Alexander Shestakov’s conversation with the Vice President for International Affairs of the West Virginia University(USA), Professor William Brustein an agreement was reached on collaboration with this university – one of the best in the state of Virginia – in the scientific and academic fields.
Moreover, an agreement was signed with the University of Pretoria (South Africa). Almost 39 thousand students are studying in this university, more than 3,600 research associates are working here, and teaching is performed in various languages of the peoples of South Africa.
Thus, South Ural State University is steadily strengthening the already existing partner relationships with foreign institutions of higher education, and is signing new agreements.
