German Metallurgy Company to Invest in SUSU Unique Laboratory

Together with the university SMS group company will create the laboratory of additive technologies.

An agreement was signed Between the the South Ural State University and SMS group, the world's leading manufacturer of metallurgical equipment, in Chelyabinsk. This is the second meeting of the parties for the last month. The memorandum of intent was signed four weeks ago.

Together with the largest university of the South Ural, SMS group will create the laboratory of additive technologies "Mechanics, laser processes and digital production technologies" headed by Professor of the Saint-Étienne National Engineering School (ENISE, France), the head of SUSU, Marina Samodurova.

There are a number of technologies that can be called additive. Their essence lies in the fact that the process takes place by adding material, unlike traditional technologies, where the creation of a detail occurs by removing "excess" material.

Early additive technologies have been used mainly in traditionally technologically advanced industries - the automobile, aerospace and aerospace industries, as well as in instrumentation and medicine.

In an innovative economy era, the time which is need to produce a product is an important factor in the business success or failure. Even if the products were made very well, its may be unclaimed if the market is already saturated with similar goods of competing companies by the time of the release of new products. Therefore, more and more industries are actively developing additive technologies.

Employees of Chelyabinsk unique laboratory will be researchers, graduate students and graduates of SUSU who have sufficient experience in this field. At first stage there was chosen place for Laboratory (on the University ground in the laboratory building), also a list of equipment was complited.

During the signing of the cooperation agreement, the Rector of SUSU Alexander Shestakov noted that the new laboratory can definitely be called the long-awaited.

“We were preparing to make a serious research center on additive technologies for several years. This year, we have reasons to implement this bold project. The news about the emergence of the laboratory was taken bu the students with great enthusiasm, so I am sure that the project will benefit both SUSU and SMS group”, the Rector emphasized.

So, representatives of SMS group noted the efficiency of the university in launching the workflow, and also drew attention to the strategic importance of the signed agreement.

"For us, SUSU is a forge of cadres, which every year produces talented and educated specialists. The creation of a laboratory in such a large university is not only a contribution to the development of our business and joint relations with the university. This is, first of all, a contribution to the development of the Ural region. Additive technologies are directly related to our strategic products, so I confidently declare that we are investing in the future, " said Pino Teese, executive vice president of the SMS Group technical service division.

In additional, we should note, that the SMS group and SUSU have been cooperating for more than 5 years: the students of the university are internships at the enterprises of the unit in Russia and Germany, and Pino Teze is a professor at the Department of Processes and Machines for Metal Processing in Press.
