Seven World-class Scientists Will Visit SUSU

 

The International Research Council from South Ural State University is holding its first formal meeting in Chelyabinsk October 10th through the 12th.

The International Research Council is a new structure that has been created at the University to coordinate research and educational activities in accordance with the best international practices.

Similar councils are being created at all the Universities participating in Project 5-100, which is aimed at helping Russian universties enter the top-100 worldwide before 2020. 

The South Ural State University International Research Council consists of 11 of the best scientists in the world who have extensive experience working in fundamental and computer science, engineering, and medicine. Seven of them will personally attend the first formal meeting in Chelyabinsk.

  • Edward L. Monser, President of Emerson Corporation (Emerson);
  • Dr Kim Jaewan, KIAS University, Seoul, South Korea. The current president of his university. His research interests are related to quantum information science;
  • Dr Ron de Kloet, Leiden University (Netherlands), Professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Known for his discoveries in the science of stress and the brain. He is also researching the increase of human vulnerability to diseases provoked by stress;
  • Dr Panayiotis Andreas Koutentis, University of Cyprus, scientific editor of the journals Molecules (Molecules) and ARKIVOC. His area of research is organic chemistry;
  • Dr Mohammed Milad, Harvard Medical School (USA), Director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. His research area is biomedicine. His major research projects are related to removing fear in extreme situations;
  • Dr Muthupandian Ashokkumar, The University of Melbourne (Australia). He is a physical chemist specializing in sonochemistry. He has also made major contributions to materials production in the Food and Dairy industry;
  • Dr Maria Josefa Yzuel, distinguished professor of Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain). Her research area is optics. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, member of the Academy of Sciences of Granada and of the Academy of Sciences of Saragossa.

Over three days the International Research Council members will visit university laboratories and get acquainted with the university's equipment, technology, and its workers. The foreign scientists will also thoroughly study the contents of some major scientific projects of SUSU to give them an expert evaluation.

Beyond that, council members will deliver lectures about developments in various fields in science and technology. In particular, Edward Monser, the President of Emerson Corporation, will talk about the art of managing the top echelon, and Dr Mohammed Milad will deliver a lecture about fear formation.

In addition, such meetings of SUSU International research council will be held several times a year.

According to Presidential Decree, no less than five Russian universities should be in the world’s hundred best till 2020. 21 universities, including SUSU, have won a competition for government support in order to enhance the competitiveness among world scientific and educational centers.
