SUSU Rector Alexandr L. Shestakov solemnly awarded the students who took an active part in restoring the University buildings which were damaged because of the meteorite blast on 15 February.
“The emergency of 15 February consolidated our university”, said A.L. Shestakov. “I want to thank students who took an active part in preserving warmth in the buildings. Students helped to remove broken glass. It was unsafe, but, thank God, everyone is alright. I wish you to study well in this semester and I want to thank you for selfless efforts in liquidating the consequences of the emergency and award you with certificates of gratitude from the University Administration”.
The buildings of South Ural State University – one of the largest universities in the Urals – were seriously damaged by the blast wave after the meteorite blast. The overall damage reached 52 million roubles. During the first hours after the emergency urgent works on restoring damaged sites started. Not only did the maintenance specialists take part in it, but also the student brigades. All in all 400 people were involved.
According to the most active volunteer, Rinat Zaripov, the students organized an emergency response center and received requests from the University staff.
“At first we had no materials and we were removing glass. At 2 o’clock p.m. the necessary materials started arriving and we began restoring warmth in the buildings,” says Rinat. “On the first day the main aim was to clean everything up and close the windows with fiberboard or polyethylene. The next day we gathered brigades of those who could work with glass and started restoring panes and frames”.
All the students awarded with the certificates of gratitude were also given invitation cards to entertainment center “Megapolis”.
