Alexander Leonidovich Shestakov, Rector of South Ural State University, Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Chelyabinsk region, Chairman of the Council of University Rectors of Ural Federal District, and Andrey Vladimirovich Shmidt, Head of Extra-Curricular Activities Department, Chairman of SUSU Trade Committee, Deputy of Chelyabinsk City Duma, were awarded with “Medals of Merits for Veteran Organization Military Brotherhood”.
From the extract of award Order: “For significant contribution to the veterans' movement development, strengthening of veterans’ friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, and active participation in the patriotic education of youth”.
At the meeting of Academic Council which was held at the end of January A.L. Shestakov was awarded by the Chairman of Veterans Organization “Military Brotherhood” Fedor I. Yurin.
One month earlier in SUSU Performance Hall the event dedicated to the 15th Anniversary of “Military Brotherhood” was held during which A.V. Shmidt was presented with the medal. In the Hall there were veterans of the Great Patriotic War, veterans of war in Afghanistan and participants of military operations in the North Caucasus and other local conflicts, including those who worked in SUSU. Among them there were Milovan I. Kovachevich, Fedor I. Yurin, Nikolay A. Karpov, Yury F. Meshkov and others. Also there were the officers and students of Military Education Faculty, the students of Chelyabinsk State Industrial Humanitarian College (CSIHC) named after the Hero of Russia A.V. Yakovlev and students of cadet corps named after Alexander Nevsky.
It was mentioned about the activity of “Military Brotherhood” organization, about our countrymen who died or were seriously injured in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Tadzhikistan, Abkhazia, and other “flash points”. The memory about our dead citizens of South Ural region was honored with a moment of silence.
South Ural State University does a great work concerning the patriotic education of the younger generation. Faculty of Military Education trains officers; the University has been successfully cooperating with veterans organizations, holding events dedicated to the Victory Day and other glorious dates of the Motherland military chronicle.
There were lots of welcome words and warm wishes said to the veterans – members of “Military Brotherhood”. The organization was awarded with honorary certificates and medals.
The anniversary medals of “Military Brotherhood” were presented to Colonel N.A. Karpov, Chief of Military Education Faculty, combatant in the North Caucasus, and to retired Colonel U.F. Meshkov, combatant in Abkhazia.
The event ended with a concert. The heartfelt singing and great dance performances left no one indifferent and caused a storm of applause.
Historical note
All-Russian Public Organization of Veterans “Military Brotherhood” was founded in December 1997 and united veterans of 35 wars and armed conflicts in 19 countries (more than one hundred thousand people). The organization is headed by the Hero of the Soviet Union Boris Gromov.
This organization consists of 36 all-Russian and inter-regional public associations of veterans, 75 regional departments, including 521 local branches.
The basic activities of organization are social protection of veterans, disabled veterans, their families and bereaved families, patriotic, moral and physical education of the youth, meetings and events devoted to the perpetuation of the memory of soldiers killed in the line of their military duty.
