SUSU Brand

Description of SUSU brand SUSU is a “SMART university which unites Europe and Asia” – nowadays this is the way the university’s motto sounds. Being located in the heart of the Southern Ural, SUSU became the foundation of positive changes which take place in the region: development of powerful industry, preservation of unique environment, creation of multicultural and multinational environment which favors to new discoveries and development of international collaboration. Today, students of more than a hundred nationalities from 48 world’s countries are studying at the largest Russian university. The university, in the frameworks of the strategy for entering the world’s educational space, is performing the task of vast cultural interaction and mutual exchange between Eastern and Western nations. An important advantage of SUSU is its geographic position. The Southern Ural is located at the intersection of two parts of the world – Europe and Asia. At the region’s territory, there are about 60 obelisks “Europe – Asia”, the majority of which are located in the Chelyabinsk region. The Southern Urals have long since been a meeting spot of different eons, cultures and ethnic groups. Since the2nd century B.C. till the 15th century, the Great Silk Way, which connected the Western European countries with China, had been passing in this area. Today the tendency to developing new connections between countries of different civilizations and social and economic systems of Europe and Asia is the leading trend of internal and foreign policy of Russia. These key circumstances became the basis of the new corporate brand mark of the university. The new logo preserves continuity of the best university’s traditions; at the same time it reflects the new development path of SUSU – the multinational, multicultural university situated at the intersection of Europe and Asia. SUSU sets a goal to be one of the leading universities of the largest continent on Earth – the Eurasia continent. According to the objectives of Project 5-100, the university aspires to strengthening its positions as a scientific-and-research, educational and innovative center among the world’s universities, which would allow it to implement significant theoretical and practical contribution to innovative development and global competitiveness of Russia in Eurasia and around the world. The logo of SUSU Leading position of the university, its striving to take dominant positions in educational, scientific and innovative activity are reflected on the logo in the form of mythical creatures – a Gryphon and a Lion, which symbolize Europe and Asia. The logo of SUSU is a demonstration of commitment to traditions, respect to the history and culture of European and Asian nations. This is the university’s aspiration to create a common Eurasian future which would be based on the priority of scientific knowledge, respect to personality, and belief in creative powers. Such future should be formed in the present. The flag’s length and width are in proportion of 2:3. The SUSU logo is placed in the center. The colors on the SUSU flag have the following meaning: white color according to the international armory system symbolizes harmony and purity, nobleness and openness, truthfulness and peacefulness, cross-national and cross-cultural mutual respect that is indicates qualities each and every human being should strive to; blue color is a symbol of motivation to perfect one’s knowledge, interdisciplinary scientific achievements and culture. Vladimir Sharutin

Vladimir Viktorovich Sharutin Professor Senior Researcher at the Department of Research and Development SUSU Vladimir Viktorovich Sharutin is the doctor of chemistry, professor, Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation, senior researcher at the Department of Research and Development Department (SUSU), and the founder and Head of the South Ural Scientific School of Organic Chemistry Specialists. He graduated from Gorky State University in 1974 and worked as an intern researcher, junior researcher at the Institute of Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Gorky. In 1982, he defended his PhD dissertation on Ferrocenyl and Cimantrenyl Compounds of Metals of IV-V groups. From 1989 to 1990, he worked as a senior teacher; in 1991-1994 he held the position of assistant professor at the Chemistry Department of Amur State University. In 1995, Prof Sharutin defended his doctorate dissertation on Pentaphenyl Compounds of Phosphorus, Antimony, Bismuth and Their Derivatives and Their Application in Organic Synthesis. In 1996-2002, he was the head and professor of Chemistry Department at Blagoveshchensk State Pedagogical University. In 2011, he started working at South Ural State University. At SUSU, Prof Sharutin heads such the Chemistry Laboratory of Organoelement Compounds and the Laboratory of X-ray Structural Analysis. Prof Sharutin studies chemistry of organoelement compounds. He has significantly contributed to the establishment of the National Chemistry School of Antimony and Bismuth Compounds, widely known in Russia and abroad for many achievements in fundamental and applied chemistry. The reactions of oxidation and phenylation of alcohols and phenols by the phenyl derivatives of antimony and bismuth discovered by V.V. Sharunin initiated the use of these derivatives in fine organic synthesis. Together with his students, Prof Sharutin discovered new types of organoelement compounds, studied the structural features of many phosphorus compounds, antimony, bismuth, cadmium, mercury, silver, gold, ruthenium, osmium, cobalt, rhodium, iridium, palladium, and platinum. Professor Sharutin has supervised 3 doctoral students and 17 PhDs; each of his students has made major contribution to the development of chemistry of organoelement compounds. Prof Sharutin has published more than 600 research papers and reports. He is the author of 8 monographs. Among the recent ones are Nomial reactions in Chemistry of Organoelement Compounds and Molecular Structure of Antimony Organic Compounds. The monographs are published at South Ural State University. In 2003, Professor Sharutin was awarded the MAIC Publishing House award for chemistry papers on aryl compounds of antimony and bismuth. The papers were published in Coordination Chemistry. Professor Sharutin is known for his enthusiasm, passion for work and perseverance. When he was young, Prof Sharutin did professional speed skating.  In addition, his sports interests include skiing, biking, swimming, racing and roller skating.

Yuri Vladimirovich Rozhdestvensky

  Yuri Vladimirovich Rozhdestvensky Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of the Department of Transport  SUSU Yuri Vladimirovich Rozhdestvensky has been working at South Ural State University since 1971 after his graduation from Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute. In 1975, he defended his PhD dissertation. In 2000, he received his doctoral degree. In 2000, he became a professor at the Department of Transport. Since 2009, he has been the Head of the Department of Transport and Vehicle Services. Since 2016, he has been the Head of the Department of Transport. Prof Rozhdestvensky successfully combines teaching and scientific work. He teaches the following disciplines at SUSU: Design and Operational Properties of Transport and Transport and Technological Machines and Equipment; and Consumer Properties, Work Processes and Automobile Calculation. Prof Rozhdestvensky’s scientific interest is tribology. He is the author of 150 scientific works including 4 monographs and 30 manuals for students. He is a member of the Editorial Board of SUSU Bulletin. Series: Mechanical Engineering. He is also an editor of international conferences proceedings. He is the scientific supervisor of commercial agreements, Federal Targeted Program projects, and various grants. He has repeatedly received different competition awards for his inventions; his students were awarded with medals and diplomas of the Ministry of Education. Since 2001, he has been the Chairman of the Dissertation Councils at SUSU. Professor Rozhdestvensky has taken part in many scientific conferences. He has presented the reports on the hydrodynamic theory of lubrication of reciprocating and rotary machines in a number of scientific centers: World Tribological Congresses (WTC) in Great Britain, Austria, the USA, Japan, Italy; Tribology and Lubrication Engineering Society (STLE); universities at several European capitals; and scientific centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Prof Rozhdestvensky is a scientific supervisor of the University Academic Laboratory Tribotechnika. He is a supervisor of 9 PhD students and 2 doctoral students. Prof Rozhdestvensky is the head of the University project Energy and Resource-Efficient Technologies in Diesel Engine Building for Armored Vehicles and Engineering Vehicles. His Department is equipped with new educational and scientific equipment and the staff is trained in the leading world scientific centers.  His Department studies dynamics and lubrication of reciprocating and rotary machines. In 2015, the Department research funding constituted 1.6 million rubles per 1 teaching position; the number of Scopus and WoS publications has significantly increased at the Department. Prof. Rozhdestvensky is the winner of the Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region award in nomination "For Pedagogical Excellence and High Performance in Professional Activities". In 2015, he was awarded the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland” IV degree. Since 2005, he has been a permanent member of the Road Safety Commission under the Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region. Since 2003, he has been a full member of the Russian Transport Academy (RTA) and the head of Russian Transport Academy Chelyabinsk Branch.  Prof. Rozhdestvensky is one of the organizers of the automobile competitions for the Russian Automobile Federation Chelyabinsk Branch. Prof Rozhdestvensky is known for his determination, amiability and optimism. He loves motorsports.

Svetlana Sheremetieva

Svetlana Olegovna Sheremetieva Professor, Doctor of Philology Department of Linguistics and Translation SUSU Director of the Science Education Center Lingvo-Innovative Technology Honorary Professor of Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Member of The European Association for Machine Translation Prof Sheremetieva graduated with honors from Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical Institute in Mathematics in English. She started her post-graduate studies at Leningrad State University as a PhD and then Doctor of Philology in Applied and Mathematical Linguistics. Prof Sheremetieva has great experience in teaching and research work, which she received while working at SUSU and abroad due to her internship at the University of Montreal (Canada). Prof Sheremetieva has worked as a leading researcher in Computational Linguistics at the University of New Mexico (USA); as a lecturer in Computational Linguistics and machine translation in Uppsala University (Sweden) and Copenhagen Business School (Denmark). These days, she holds the position of professor at the Department of Linguistics and Translation at South Ural State University. Prof Sheremetieva initiated the establishment of the Science Education Center Lingvo-Innovative Technology at SUSU. As the Center director, she heads projects on the creation of digital resources for automatic processing and text translation. Currently, Prof Sheremetieva teaches bachelors, master’s students and PhDs. Among her PhD students in Applied and Mathematical Linguistics were: O. I. Babina (Model of Information Extraction from Technical Texts, 2006); and P. G. Osminin (Abstracting and annotating models of scientific and technical texts focused on automatic translation, 2016) Prof Sheremetieva has participated in many scientific conferences, given presentations and lectures on her research. She held lectures on Applied Linguistics at the University of Bilkent (Ankara, Turkey) in 2000. In 2011, she the European Association grant for Machine Translation and organized the International Intensive School for Machine Translation with the participation of leading foreign specialists. In 2012, she did a course of lectures on Machine Translation at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (Kazakhstan). Among Prof Sheremetieva’s latest achievements is the development of new automatic text processing models in the field of annotating, abstracting and machine translation and automation for linguistic studies. The research results are published in the proceedings of prestigious international conferences. Prof Sheremetieva is a member of the European Association for Machine Translation and a member of Organizing Committees for many international conferences: EAMT, MT SUMMIT, and LREC. Prof Sheremetieva has strongly contributed to the SUSU international relations while working abroad and organizing internships for SUSU students at the University of New Mexico (USA) and Copenhagen Business School (Denmark). Prof Sheremetyeva is a leading scientist in the field of linguistic description formalization and automatic text processing systems.  

Olga Sharutina

Olga Konstantinovna Sharutina Professor, Doctor of Chemical Science Deputy Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry Institute of Natural Sciences SUSU Prof Olga Konstantinovna Sharutina graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry, Gorky State University. In 2001, she received her doctoral degree in Chemical Sciences. In 2004, she gained her diploma the Higher Attestation Commission Professor. She’s been working at SUSU since 2012. Currently, Prof Sharutina is an Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation. In 2003, she became the winner of IAP award in chemistry. She successfully combines research and teaching. Her main courses reflect her interests: Basic Principles of Chemistry, X-Ray Analysis, and Basic Principles of Crystal Chemistry. Prof Sharutina’s research results are used for organizing laboratory workshops on the basic principles of organoelement compounds in chemistry and the x-ray analysis. Prof Sharutina specializes in the chemistry of organoelement compounds. She is interested in studying antimony and bismuth organic compounds and their structure and synthesis. Her research is a significant contribution to the development of organoelement compounds in chemistry. Currently, Prof Sharutina is working on extraction and structure determination of unusual polynuclear antimony and bismuth-containing complexes. Prof Sharutina has published more than 400 research papers and 3 monographs, one of which focuses on molecular structures of organic compounds of antimony. Prof Sharutina has guided 9 PhD students for the doctorate. Porf Sharutina’s students made a significant contribution to the study of antimony and bismuth organic compounds. Over the past 3 years (2014-2016), Prof Sharutina has published 58 papers in WoS journals. Prof Sharutina is known for her self-discipline. She spends her free time reading and doing sports (biking in summer and skiing in winter). She also loves traveling.  

Vitaliy Tanana

Vitaliy Pavlovich Tanana Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Head of the Department of Computational Mathematics Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Computer Science SUSU Prof Tanana is a well-known expert in the field of ill-posed problems and their solution. Prof Tanana’s areas of scientific research include methods of solving inverse problems for linear and non-linear differential operator equations; the development and study of methods for solving certain inverse problems in mathematical physics; the development and study of methods for solving ill-posed problems in mathematical physics. Prof Tanana developed formulas for assessing the accuracy of methods for solving such problems, which take into account the solution information, in particular, approximate and sustainable methods for the solution of operator equations of the first kind, and the calculation of unbounded operator in the case of the inaccurate initial data or the operator. Prof Tanana researched the situation of the violation of other correction conditions (according to J. Hadamard). The research results have found their practical application in a number of areas, for example, geophysics. The results were published in 5 monographs and numerous papers. His research work on the theory of ill-posed problems was awarded the Ural State University Prize in 1983. One doctoral and 17 PhD dissertations were defended under Prof Tanana’s supervision. Among his best students are researchers A. R. Danilin, L. D. Menikhes, M. A. Rekant, S. I. Yanchenko.  Prof Tanana has taken part in many scientific conferences; he has given lectures on the theory of ill-posed problems in several scientific centers such as Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of RAS, Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Branch of RAS, and Ural State University.  

Leonid Sokolinsky

Leonid Borisovich Sokolinsky Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Vice-Rector for Informatization Head of the Department of System Programming SUSU Prof Sokolinsky was born on February 15, 1960 in Chelyabinsk. In 1982, he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics at Chelyabinsk State University (CSU). From 1982 till 1985, he worked as a teacher of mathematics and computer science at school No. 31 in Chelyabinsk. In 1990, he defended his PhD dissertation at Moscow State University. His dissertation topic was Technological Complex for the Program Development of TIP-programming Technology for MVK Elbrus. In 2003. Prof Sokolinsky defended his doctoral dissertation in Physical and Mathematical Sciences on the topic of Organizations Methods of Organization for Parallel Database Systems on Computing Systems with Mass Parallelism. Until 2004, he had worked as Head of the Department of System Programming at CSU. Then he began working at South Ural State University as Head of the Department of System Programming. From 2011 till 2013, he worked as Dean of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Informatics at South Ural State University. Today, he is Vice–Rector for Informatization at SUSU. Prof Sokolinsky delivers a special course on database systems for the English-language Master's degree program. Under his supervision, the Laboratory for Supercomputer Modeling was opened at the University. Prof Sokolinsky’s research interests include the following areas: systems of creation and support for problem-oriented database; system software for supercomputers; parallel computational technologies; distributed computations and cloud technologies; e-learning; mathematical programming. Prof Sokolinsky has written and co-written 17 papers; 5 of them were indexed in Scopus, and 4 of them appeared in the journals from the HCC list. Currently, Prof Sokolinsky is the Dissertation Council Chairman at SUSU; a member of the Expert Council on Info-Communication Technology and Computing Systems of the Russian Foundation (2005-2011, 2015 – present), Head of Master’s program Fundamental Computer Science and Information Technologies; Head of PhD program Mathematical and Computer Software, Complexes and Computer Networks (since 2006); member of the Education Board Presidium on Applied Mathematics and Informatics (since 2010); Executive Editor of SUSU Bulletin. Series: Computational Mathematics and Informatics (since 2012); Executive Editor of Supercomputing Frontiers and Innovations (2014); member of the Program Committee of Annual International Scientific Conference DEXA. In 2015, thanks to Prof Sokolinsky and his Department SUSU received 16 340 000,00 RUB. Leonid Borisovich Sokolinsky is a manager of two Department grants. Prof Sokolinsky is an established scientist known for his intelligence, sociability, self-discipline and a wide range of interests. Apart from information technology, he enjoys skiing, reading fiction and watching movies.  

Sergei Sapozhnikov

Sergei Borisovich Sapozhnikov Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of the Department of Technical Mechanics Aerospace Faculty SUSU In 1975, Prof Sapozhnikov graduated with honors from Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute with the qualification of an engineer. In 1981, he received a PhD degree; in 1996 he became the Doctor of Technical Sciences. Now he is the Dean of Extramural Studies Faculty, head of the Technical Mechanics Department. He is also the Scientific Director of the following Centers: Center for Composite Materials and Constructions, Center for Experimental Mechanics, Center for Materials Science and Nanotechnologies. Prof Sapozhnikov is a scientific consultant for a number of innovative enterprises. Prof Sapozhnikov is a member of the European Society for Composite Materials (ESCM), the International Association of Engineers (IAEng), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Nanotechnological Society of Russia (NtSR), the Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation. Prof Sapozhnikov is a member of the Editorial Boards of the following scientific journals: SUSU Bulletin. Series: Mechanical Engineering; Composites and Nanostructures (ISSP RAS); Space Engineering and Technology (Aerospace corporation “Energia” named after S.P. Korolev); PNRPU Bulletin. Mechanics (indexed by Scopus). Prof Sergei Sapozhnikov gives lectures for Master’s students in applied mechanics, namely, computer-aided design and mechanics of composite materials and structures. He heads a PhD program Dynamics and Strength of Machines, Devices and Equipment. Five PhD dissertations were defended under his supervision (dissertations by M.V. Vorental and N.Y. Dolganina defended in 2010 and focused on numerical solutions to the problems of the body impact interaction with fabric and metal barriers (body armour elements). Prof Sapozhnikov specializes in experimental and computer dynamics of deformation and fracture of composite materials and structures with the use of high-performance computing. Prof Sapozhnikov is the author of the widely recognized theories of accumulation of scattered microdamages and the structural strength of composite materials, the theory of nanocomposite strength, the concept of using fabrics of different weaves in the bulletproof vest structure, protection from hollow charge grenades, and the methods of low visibility of armored vehicles over a wide frequency range. He is the author of more than 200 scientific publications including monographs and patents. Prof Sapozhnikov has delivered lectures in the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Latvia, Spain, and Portugal. Professor Sapozhnikov has participated in various international scientific conferences presenting his research on the strength of composite materials in critical structures. He is an official reviewer of a number of international journals such as Journal of Composite Materials, Composite Science and Technology, International Journal of Impact Engineering, Materials and Industry, and many other journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science. His inventions are widely used for aerospace structure design (PJSC Tupolev, JSC Academician V.P. Makeyev State Rocket Centre) and human and technical protection systems against local impacts (CJSC FORT Technology is the leading supplier of protective equipment of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation). Prof Sapozhnikov was awarded for his works in the field of strength of composite materials and protective structures (Medal of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the USSR: 1972; RF Cosmonautics Federation Medals: 2011, 2013; Soros Foundation Award: 1997; Intel Award: 2010. Under his supervision, major research projects were carried out for Russian Science Foundation grants, Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and for a number of Federal target programs. Prof Sapozhnikov does a lot of organizational and methodological work at the University. He is a member of the Dissertation Defense Board at the Aerospace Faculty, a member of the Scientific and Technical Council and a member of SUSU Directorate. He has repeatedly participated in the work of the specialized commissions such as the Ministry for Economic Development of the Chelyabinsk Region and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation on nanomaterials. He is known for his enviable erudition, determination and creative mind. Prof Sapozhnikov can quickly capture people’s attention and he is interested in new and unusual things. He devotes a lot of time to self-development, masters his English, reads science fiction and biographies and he loves playing sports and caravanning.
