A Puddle for Professor? A SUSU Scientist Can Clean Water Bodies off Heavy Metals and Radioactive Elements

...In his hands my interviewee holds some whitish granules, which look like fertilizers. It is a unique sorbing agent, an invention that took dozens of years to create. It has not been duly appreciated yet. But it may happen that these granules save our planet one day. The author of the invention is a SUSU Professor Gennady Mikhailov. Today we are talking to him about the most pressing problems of ecology.

Adaptive Medicine: Early Non-Invasive Diagnosis of Stress-Related Diseases

Address: South Ural State University Main University Building 76, Prospect Lenina Tel.: + 7 351 267 96 87 Research Team Vadim Tseilikman D.Sc., Professor Natalia Kundikova D.Sc., Professor About The project focuses on the development of the early non-invasive diagnosis of stress-related diseases. The project is multidisciplinary and unites specialists from the fields of medicine, biology, physics, and chemistry. Its primary aim is the early detection of disease-related changes during the latent period, that serve as the disease markers. Hair is chosen as the biological material for the research as a reliable indicator of conformational changes in its proteins, in particular, keratins. One of the primary research methods used will be the Raman scattering method. Due to the dynamic disease development, it is vital to undertake the necessary measurements as frequently as possible. The scientists are planning to research the level of keratin sensitivity to the inducers of oxidative stress. The research team hopes to determine the number of biophysical properties of hair cells that undergo noticeable changes during the development of stress-related diseases. The researchers expect that as the disease develops, the level of keratin sensitivity to the inducers of oxidative stress will keep increasing. As a result, it will be possible to detect the stress-related disease markers during the latent period. This research can have fundamental implications for the early detection of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory system diseases. Results The research team is planning to patent their method of early non-invasive diagnosis of stress-related diseases, such as PTSD, depression, and cancer and introduce it to medical practice. Samsung Internet of Things Academy

Address: South Ural State University Office 804, University Building №3B 87, Prospect Lenina Tel.: + 7 351 267 90 50; + 7 351 267 99 35 About Samsung IoT Academy is a unique educational programme organised by Samsung in the leading Russian universities. The aim of the IoT Academy is to teach students the necessary skills and provide practical experience in the field of the Internet of Things and intelligent data analysis so that they get into the Industry 4.0 state of mind upon completion. In September 2018, the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science successfully launched Samsung IoT Academy at South Ural State University. The long-term project designed by the experts from Samsung Electronics is aimed at providing free 2-semester training in IoT and intelligent data analysis for students. IoT is the next step in internet evolution and the essential part of Industry 4.0. The Internet of Things refers to the interrelated objects connected to the Internet, ranging from home devices to industrial equipment, and the analysis of vast and varied data to manage the orchestration of such devices. Smart IoT systems do not require human intervention, resulting in the improvement of people’s quality of life and the optimisation of business processes. Achievements June 2018: South Ural State University and Samsung Electronics signed an agreement on the joint implementation of the Samsung IoT Academy educational programme. November  2018: official opening of Samsung IoT Academy, equipped with high-tech Samsung devices, prototyping tools, and Artik IoT modules. The Academy enables students to get hands-on experience and master their problem-solving skills to meet the challenges of the Internet of Things successfully. Partners

Emerson PlantWeb

Address: South Ural State University Office 432, University Building №3BV 87, Prospect Lenina   Head of the Laboratory Mikhail Biziaev Ph.D., Associate Professor About The Emerson PlantWeb laboratory was born as a result of the close and long-standing partnership between South Ural State University and Metran of Emerson. The central focus of Emerson PlantWeb is the development of measurement, control, and automation solutions for industrial processes on the basis of PlantWeb, the distributed intelligence digital ecosystem (Emerson-Metran-SUSU). The laboratory provides the basis for research and development in the field of process automation and industrial control systems. The Emerson PlantWeb laboratory enables students to conduct research projects applying advanced process control principles based on fuzzy logic, neural networks, and model predictive control. The laboratory facility consists of three hydraulic circuits and enables to regulate the temperature of the external environment. This facility is the physical model of the most common industrial processes (chemical industry, oil industry, food industry, etc.). Emerson PlantWeb features cutting-edge tools and facilities for pioneering research on automation engineering, such as: smart wireless sensors for intelligent industrial networks (Smart Wireless); emergency shutdown systems; process simulators for half-scale process modelling. Achievements The research team has developed the Smart Pipes intelligent system that enables leakage reduction and automatic pressure management of urban water distribution networks. The project became one of the finalists at Microsoft Imagine Cup and received a special prize from Nokia. International students from China, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Jordan are currently taking English-language courses offered by the laboratory. Partners
