About Migration has always been one of the fundamental processes in human history. The contemporary migration crisis places historical migration studies at the top of the agenda. Further, the crisis highlights the necessity of an in-depth exploration of migration flows, mass migration management, humanitarian medical aid, transportation, and social adaptation. Historically being at the centre of different migration routes, the Urals region is a unique place for studying the past and present of human mobility.  The interdisciplinary Laboratory for Migration Studies is the first research group that brings together specialists from social sciences and humanities to bridge historical analysis with the most pressing challenges of contemporary migration. Achievements Memorandum of Understanding between South Ural State University and Carleton University on collaborative Eurasian migration studies; Organisation of international conferences in collaboration with the University of Basel (Russian-Swiss academic conference on colonisation in the Urals and Siberia during the XVII-XX centuries, June 2016; international seminar on transcontinental and transnational migration in the Russian Empire and the USSR during the XIX-XX centuries, September 2016); Participation in the international workshop “Management and Experiences of Migration in Modern East European History” at Basel University, September 2018; Research monograph on migration in post-Soviet states (“Interrogating Illiberal Peace in Eurasia. Critical Perspectives on Peace and Conflict, Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) written by the head of the laboratory Prof. Jeff Sahadeo. Partners
