Institute with Rich History
Linguists, philologists and translators, experts in China, experts in the field of international relations, political scientists and managers graduate from the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications. It accumulates the latest achievements of theoretical and applied science in the field of linguistics, philology, international relations, political science, management, history and archaeology.
The Institute of Linguistics and International Communications has a rich history, although it was officially established four years ago. The Institute united the Faculty of Linguistics, the Institute of International Education and the International Faculty. Thus, the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications has gained more opportunities for international integration, and new fields of study that meet modern requirements have opened. The Institute is headed by Candidate of Sciences (Pedagogy), Associate Professor Elena Yaroslavova:
“At the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications we train only professionals: translators, specialists of rare professions at the intersection of applied linguistics and information technology. Experts in foreign regional studies, international relations, as well as teachers and political scientists graduate from the Institute.”
A distinctive feature of the Institute is advanced language training. The representatives of the Institute call the knowledge of languages the basis of intercultural communication.
“The Institute is the only one that offers students to study several languages of their choice, including studying with native speakers,” continued the Director of the Institute. “The acquired knowledge is confirmed by international certificates. The acquisition of practical skills is carried out on the basis of modern technologies: students have the latest training complexes, simulators, multimedia computer classes, simultaneous translation classes, software (electronic training and research complexes), and modern educational literature at their disposal.”
More than 700 students study at the Institute, and 200 teachers (75 of whom are candidates and doctors of sciences) help them become qualified specialists. Classes are held in multimedia classrooms and language laboratories. In addition to training, students can be engaged into scientific activities: participate in conferences and publish their works in collected student papers.
Extra-curricular life is no less active: students from different countries regularly share about their cultures, organize national holidays and participate in creative festivals: Slavic Writing Day, the annual international festival “We Are All Different, but We Are Together”, calligraphy competition, Hispanicisation Day, Francophonie Day, Days of Chinese and Italian languages.

Unique Programmes
The Institute places great emphasis on the study of foreign languages. The main languages are English and Chinese, after the first course of studies you can choose German, French, Spanish or Italian.
In the programme “Translation and Translation Studies” (45.03.02 “Linguistics”) students master the professional competencies necessary for working as an interpreter and translator, as well as for working in the field of linguistic education. This field provides an excellent base of core competencies in the global world. The acquired communication skills in two foreign languages will always be useful: both in everyday and professional communication; and the ability to work with text (critical perception, analysis, synthesis and interpretation) is necessary to meet the challenges of distance technologies at present.
Obtaining an acceptable and high-in-demand Specialist’s diploma of complete higher education (equal to that of the Master’s degree diploma) in “Translation and Translation Studies. Linguistic Support of Interstate Relations” (45.05.01 “Translation and Translation Studies”) helps graduates to carry out various types of translation and interpretation (including simultaneous interpretation), abstract and annotate texts of any subject, to be fluent in two foreign languages, and to use modern information technologies in their translation activities.
In the programme “Fundamental and Applied Linguistics” (45.03.03 “Fundamental and Applied Linguistics”) students are trained in modern approaches to linguistics, as well as the skills necessary for linguists, designers of linguistics-based software used by machine translators, search engines and chat bots. This is one of the most popular and innovative fields of study, built at the intersection of information technology and linguistics. Education in this field is not offered by every metropolitan university.
The fundamentals of diplomacy, geopolitics, applied analysis of international situations, economics at all levels of world politics are included in the programme “International Relations: Regional Integration in Modern World” (41.04.05 “International Relations”). Graduates are trained to work in diplomatic structures, ministries and agencies of the Russian Federation, departments of foreign economic activity of enterprises, expert and analytical departments of mass media.
“Asian Studies” and “Eurasian Studies” programmes (41.03.01 “Foreign Regional Studies”) are relevant for those who plan to devote their activity to establishing international and business contacts with China, master Chinese and English. Students study the political geography and history of China, modern Chinese literature, and business etiquette.
A new field of study in the Institute is “Political Management”. It is the students of this field (41.03.04 “Political Studies”) who are to build the future of Russia. They are taught to understand political processes, analyze and predict them, build relationships between authorities and representatives of other spheres, resolve political conflicts and disputes using the mediation procedure.
Education in the Institute can be continued in the Master’s degree programmes. Linguistic field offers the programme “Theory and Practice of Translation” (45.04.02 “Linguistics”). Students receive classical education in humanities, thanks to which they can independently conduct scientific research, translate various types of texts from two languages, accompany international forums and negotiations, including working with delegations from foreign countries.
In “Regional Integration in Modern World” programme (41.04.05 “International Relations”) students study the regional aspects of the global political, legal, economic and information space, learn to evaluate, model and predict global processes.
Students are trained to analyze political situation, manage political processes at all levels, and build relationships with government structures in the framework of the programme “Political Analysis and Political Processes Management” (41.04.04 Political Science).
“Geoinformation Systems in Management” program (38.04.02 “Management”) is mastered by future specialists in the field of process and organization management through the use of geoinformation technologies. Graduates are taught to use a new digitalization tool that is GIS systems, methods of economic and strategic analysis of the behaviour of economic agents and markets in a global environment, to manage companies, teams and projects.

Elite training programmes are being implemented at the Institute for students with high achievements. They help to reveal and fulfil talents, develop additional professional competencies. At the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies, there is Honours School of Linguistics and Translation Studies program. Within its framework, the best teachers read advanced author courses “Fundamentals of Translation Cursive”, “Third Foreign Language”, “New Information Technology”, “Audio-Visual Translation” and others.
Admission Requirements
In order to apply to the Institute in international fields, an applicant must pass the unified state exams in the Russian language, History and Social Studies. To enter the fields related to linguistics, you need the results of exams in the Russian language, Social Studies and a Foreign Language. As the teachers explain, it is not enough to know just the words of any language. They mean nothing without the context in which they are placed. And the context cannot be understood without knowledge of the history and culture of the people who speak the language.

International Institute
The Institute can be called the most international institution within SUSU. Students study in mixed groups, and the Russian students communicate closely and become friends with the representatives of China, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries of the world from the first year of studies. This helps international students assimilate faster in the new environment, and the Russian-speaking students get acquainted with the culture and traditions of other countries.
First of all, the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language offers foreign citizens Bachelor’s degree programme “Teaching of Philological Courses” (45.03.01 “Philology”), and Master's degree programme “Russian as a Foreign Language” (45.04.01 “Philology”); their graduates can work as teachers of the Russian language and literature in their home countries. This year, the Master's degree programme “Russian Language in Business Communication” (45.04.01 “Philology”) has been opened; it gives the possibility to master the oral and written business language. This is important for those who want to work in joint companies or open their own business.
Education Abroad
The Centre for International Education of the Institute is engaged into partnerships and develops educational programs with leading scientific, educational and high-tech companies in the world, including in English.
Students of the Institute can learn Chinese and English, by taking the internships abroad. The Institute offers more than 15 directions to the countries of Asia and Europe, and even South America: Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia.
To go on exchange study, students must demonstrate good academic performance and a high level of language. Training lasts 1 or 2 semesters; all mastered courses are then accepted at SUSU. At the request of the student, participation in academic exchange programs is indicated in the diploma of education.

Projects of the Future
The inclusion of students in project activity is one of the strategic fields of the Institute. In practice students obtain and apply knowledge that will be useful to them in their future profession.
For example, students and teachers of the Department of International Relations, Politology and Regional Studies are developing the concept of the SCO youth forum. It will result in a meeting of students of the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which will be held in the Chelyabinsk Region.
Compilation of Russian-Italian dictionaries for industrial partners is a project of the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies. The linguistic support of production processes is supported by the Russian Electric Motors company; such vocabulary will help its employees to communicate effectively and work with foreign partners.
It is also planned to launch a project in the Digital Industry field. Students in the field of “Fundamental and Applied Linguistics” will create chat bots in Russian and Chinese for the Russian and Chinese enterprises.
International students of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language are trying their hands in creating a nationally oriented electronic course of Russian as a foreign language. As future teachers, they learn to use new technologies for their professional activity: make presentations, cartoons, and shoot videos to explain grammar easily.

Successful Career of Graduates
Graduates of the Institute are always welcome employees in large companies in the Chelyabinsk Region, such as Makfa, Metran, and Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. They work in travel agencies, banks, language schools, and even head them; for example, the former students of the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications Natalia Artiushenko, Alexandra Chizom and Evgeniia Stoianova head the language centres such as Cambridge - English School, Little Britain, and Do it Yourself.
Our graduates are successfully building their careers in the field of public service: Maria Mironiuk is a leading specialist of the Agency for International Cooperation of the Chelyabinsk Region; Valeria Grabovskaia is a senior expert of the Department of External Relations and Business Councils of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation; Anton Artyomov is a head of the department of expert and analytical work of the Government of the Chelyabinsk Region.
