From June 3rd through 10th of 2018, Calotte Academy international traveling symposium and scientific forum on Arctic research was held in the cities of European Arctic: Rovaniemi and Inari (Finland); Kirkenes and Neiden (Norway); Apatity and Murmansk (Russia).
The symposium brought together notorious Arctic researchers and scientists from different countries of the world. Our university was represented by Associate Professor of the SUSU Department of Social Studies and Political Science, Maksim Gutenev, whose research interests are connected with Arctic research. The main goal of the forum was assistance to the interdisciplinary discourse, as well as to political and academic dialogue between scientists carrying out research of Arctic, indigenous residents of the North, and politicians. This year, Calotte Academy’s topic was discourses about Arctic: interdisciplinary theories and methods of Arctic research.
Maksim Gutenev took active participation in the symposium’s discussions, and successfully presented his report on geopolitical processes in Arctic. The active participation in the scaleous scientific forum allowed strengthening and expanding already-existing sustainable scientific contacts with the world’s leading researchers of Arctic form the USA, Norway, Finland, Canada, Iceland and China.
Besides, Professor from the University of Lapland, L. Heininen, invited Maksim Gutenev to join “The Thematic Network (TN) on Geopolitics and Security” international Arctic organization, which will allow our university to get presented at more scaleous international Arctic venues and strengthen SUSU’s positions in global rankings.
