April 13th though 16th of 2018, the 4th International Olympiad for Legal Clinics Students on Professional Lawyer Skills was held in Krasnovidovo holiday center (Moscow) as organized by the Center of Development of Legal Clinics and with support from Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Garant Company.
Among the Olympiad’s participants were 48 students of legal clinics from 33 universities of Russia and CIS countries, clinicist students from 20 regions of Russia, as well as from Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. To participate in this event, the legal clinic of the SUSU Institute of Law delegated a student of the third year of studies Anna Romanova.
The Olympiad participants were divided into 8 teams of 6. Each team comprised representatives of different universities.
Within the period of three days the teams were passing five contest rounds on one case, and each round was assessed by experts in legal clinical education, by practicing lawyers, and representatives of the academic community.
Each one of the five Olympiad rounds was devoted to assessing one of practical skills of a lawyer. During the first round the teams held primary and repeated interviewing of a legal clinic customer. In the second round the participants analyzed factual allegations and elaborated a case theory. The third round included consulting for the customer. In the fourth Olympiad round the teams drew up the litigation documents and approved them with the customer. And in the end, during the final fifth round the teams met at the legal proceedings.
The Olympiad’s judges were Director of the Center of Development of Legal Clinics M.D. Dranzhevsky; Chairperson of the Board of the Center of Development of Legal Clinics, Candidate of Sciences (Law) I.N. Lukyanova; Doctor of Sciences (Law), Professor, Head of the Department of Commercial Law and Fundamentals of Legal Science E.A. Abrosimova; partner of 2В.LAW OFFICE Company A.V. Gorodetsky; Head of the Legal Office of the Center of Development of Legal Clinics S.V. Dmitryachev; and others.
The Olympiad became an educational space for training lawyer practical skills. The judges delivered their presentations to share on the basics of interviewing a client, analyzing a case and elaborating a case theory, oral consulting, legal technicalities, and solicitation. After each round every team’s work was analyzed.
As a result of the Olympiad, the team which included the SUSU Institute of Law representative took the fourth place. When assessing the level of lawyer practical skills among the clinicist students the judges admitted high level of training of the participants.
