On March 28th an opening ceremony for the All-Russian Contest-Conference for Undergraduates was held at Saint-Petersburg Mining University. Within the course of three days 214 young scientists from 30 leading Russian universities were delivering their presentations under 35 topics in this city on the banks of Neva River.
The presentations of the forum’s participants were devoted to such issues as prospecting and exploration of the fields of mineral resources, oil and gas geology, blasting work, well drilling, mine surveying, environment protection, and many others.
Students of the 2nd year of studies under Master’s program Elena Dementyeva (1st place), Ksenia Telmanova (3rd place), and a Specialist program student of the 4th year of study Oksana Salakhutdinova (3rd place) representing the Department of Life Safety of the Polytechnic Institute became the winners under the category on Safety of Processes and Productions.
They presented their research studies on the following topical issues:
- Elena Dementyeva, П-267: Studying the Properties of Foam Polysterene When Treated with Fire-retarding Compositions Based on Aqueous Solutions of Water-glass (academic advisors: Associate Professor I.P. Palatinskaya, Associate Professor S.I. Borovik);
- Ksenia Telmanova, П-267: Studying the Factors Affecting the Parameters of Combustibility of the Mixture of Calcium Carbide and Water (academic advisor: Associate Professor A.I. Soldatov);
- Oksana Salakhutdinova, П-458: Studying the Conditions of Ignition of Various Combustible Materials When Locally Heated (academic advisor: Associate Professor A.I. Soldatov).
The contest winners and awardees have an a priori competitive advantage on the labour market. They get a chance of continuing their education under postgraduate programs or being hired by one of the leading enterprises of our country’s mineral resources sector. That is exactly why the delegations which arrive to the oldest technical university of Russia in the end of March comprise very distinguished members.
