SUSU Hosted Participants of the First All-Russian Forum of Young Metallurgists

The first All-Russian Forum of Young Metallurgists, organized by the "Young Guard of United Russia" All-Russian Public Organization with the support from the Government of the Chelyabinsk Region, wrapped up in Chelyabinsk.

The event brought together 200 young specialists from various regions of Russia, who got acquainted with the leading industrial enterprises and scientific centres of the Chelyabinsk Region over two days. The forum participants visited the Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant, Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant, "KONAR" Industrial Group, South Ural State University. SUSU became one of the main platforms for demonstrating innovations in metallurgy. The forum participants were welcomed at the university by the Vice-Rector for Student and Social Affairs Anastasiia Lapo and Deputy Director of the Institute of Engineering and Technology Ivan Ilyin, who, together with volunteers, conducted excursions to the university's leading laboratories in the fields of metallurgy and mechanical engineering.

“For the university, ensuring active interaction with youth public organizations is an additional opportunity to not only develop the professional and creative potential of students, but also to create conditions for the full participation of children in the life of society. I am confident that the participation of SUSU as a platform for the All-Russian Forum of Young Metallurgists is the first step towards fruitful cooperation!” noted Anastasiia Lapo.

The participants got acquainted with the Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, where they could see the Robotics Centre, modern technologies for processing materials and experimental mechanics. One of the key moments of the excursion to SUSU was a visit to the Laboratory of Hydrogen Technologies in Metallurgy. Young metallurgists learned about the process of iron reduction using hydrogen, which allows to significantly reduce the carbon footprint and improve the quality of products. In addition, the forum participants got acquainted with the modern equipment of the laboratory: high-temperature furnaces for working with gases, complexes for sample preparation and material research, equipment for simulation and planning of metallurgical processes.

Timofey Skripov, a student at the SUSU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology and a participant in the forum, shared his impressions:

"Such events are extremely important for future specialists. They allow not only to see modern methods of working with metal, but also to understand how the industry is developing as a whole. Hydrogen metallurgy, robotics and digitalization are what determines the future of metallurgy. Participation in the forum gave me an opportunity to learn about the latest developments and communicate with like-minded people. This is an invaluable experience for my professional trajectory."

It should be noted that the event at the territory of the university campus was held as part of the implementation of the roadmap on the Agreement on Cooperation and Interaction between South Ural State University and the Chelyabinsk Regional Branch of the "Young Guard of United Russia" All-Russian Public Organization, signed in July 2025.
