IMSSH Department of Philology is founded by the order of the rector №43 by 23.06.1999 from 01.07.1999 in purpose of providing specialized department of qualitative preparation of students of humanitarian specialties.
In the head of department is professor and Doctor of Philology Tatyana Semyan. Teaching stuff of the department is performing a teaching load in all SUSU institutes and schools by discipline «Russian language and speech culture» and in a number of philological disciplines in other fields of study. The department is training alumni at all levels of higher education: bachelor's degree, master's degree, postgraduate course.
The department successfully implements the concept of integrating educational, scientific and educational work focused on professional realization in creating a unified humanitarian space of the city. The concept is realized through the work of the Institute of curation, the development by students of practice-oriented disciplines of the curriculum, as well as the organization and holding of traditional events of various levels: cathedral (Days of Slavic Writing, New Year’s Literary Masquerade Ball, etc.), urban (business games «Sharks of the Pen», Philological games», Workshop of Theater Criticism and international events (scientific conference «Literary text of the XX-XXI centuries», scientific conference of young scientists «Language. Culture. Media communication».
From 2018 the department successfully realizes a project model of education: masters from the department are creating Virtual South Ural writers museum.
The department is publishing online scientific journal «Language. Culture. Media communication» – indexed in RISC, where works of students, postgraduates, young scientists are publishing.
The department is actively involved in the Olympiad movement. For many years, it has been providing methodological support for the «Multidisciplinary Engineering Olympiad «Zvezda»», and also organizes Olympiad «Prometheus», which since 2022 received a status of an all-Russian and expanded the subject: since this year, the Olympiad includes questins not only on the Russian language, but also on literature.
Students of the department have an opportunity to study such exclusive disciplines, as «Polish language», which is taught by assistant professor Denis Pelikhov, and «Linguistic examination of the text», which is taught by assistant professor of the department, accredited by Roskomnadzor Natalya Shlemova.
In 2022, the department opened the «Digital Philology» laboratory, which allows bachelors, masters and graduate students to conduct modern research and create relevant digital products. As part of the laboratory’s work, a study of the literary field of modern Ural poetry (it has about 100 names) was conducted using network analysis. With the help of spatial analysis, the study of emotional categories in Ural poetry was carried out. The results of the study are published in the journal «Digital Scholarship in the Humanities» (Q1, top 10%).
In recent years scientific school «Development of a typological model of the text/media text of relevant literature» was established. The main research material is South Ural literature. Surveys of scientific school were awarded by RSF grants three times.
The department cooperates with leading literary centers in Russia (Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Kazan, Samara and others), Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia.
