Applicant 2021: Study Physics at SUSU

Physics and optics create new technologies of transmitting, receiving, processing, storing, and displaying of information. Modern Internet would be impossible without computer technologies and mathematics. You can become an in-demand specialist in this field after obtaining education at South Ural State University.

Fundamental training of specialists

The Department of Optoinformatics of SUSU invites applicants to take training in programme 03.03.01 Applied Mathematics and Physics. The programme aims at fundamental training of specialists in the fields of physics, mathematics, and computer technology, and is being implemented in collaboration with the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Students acquire fundamental knowledge not only in physics and mathematics, but also in theoretical physics. The level of training allows to engage in scientific research in any field of physics, while special disciplines reflect the direction of fundamental research of the department’s academic staff members and include laser physics, polarization optics, and wave theory.

During the first 3 years of training students obtain theoretical education and are engaged in experimental work at teaching-and-research installations using computer modelling, and learn the English language in depth. On the 4th year of study they perform research work at the Institute of Electrophysics at the Urals Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the SUSU Physical Research Laboratory under the supervision of scientists with internationally recognized reputation.

Such training provides an opportunity to lay the foundation for future career in research activity and become a research physicist, who can work practically in any field of science and engineering, including chemistry, computer sciences, mathematics, and biology.

SUSU alumnus Mikhail Driazgov, who is a research fellow at the Quantum Detectors Laboratory of Moscow Pedagogical State University, shares on his studies:

“The university provided me with a versatile basic education, which allows to specialize in various fields of science and engineering. Currently I’m a postgraduate student at the Higher School of Economics. In addition, the knowledge and skills that I obtained during my studies at the Department of Optoinformatics are the base of my successful work at the Quantum Detectors Laboratory in Moscow.”

The training takes 4 years full-time and can be either state-funded, or contract-based. Entrance examinations in: speciality-related Mathematics (Unified State Examination), Russian Language (Unified State Examination), Physics (Unified State Examination), or Computer Science (Unified State Examination).

New level, new horizons

Graduates can continue their studies at South Ural State University in Master’s programme 03.04.01 Applied Mathematics and Physics, in Master’s programme major in Fibre and Laser Optics being fulfilled at the Faculty of Physics of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, or in similar programmes in other universities in Russia or abroad.

Classes are held by qualified teaching staff. The academic staff members of the department include 3 doctors of sciences and 13 candidates of sciences. Several teaching staff members hold Ph.D. of European and American universities. Many of the department staff members have a vast experience of working at universities in Germany, France, the USA, as well as in the academic institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Students of the Department of Optoinformatics learn to operate modern equipment at the Physical Research Laboratory.

The department alumni work in various universities and research institutes in the Russian Federation, Europe, Australia, China, Asia, and the USA.

Entrance examinations – Master’s degree examination.

The main employers of the department’s graduates are: Russian Federal Nuclear Centre – VNIITF (Zababakhin All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Electrophysics at the Urals Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The department’s academic partners include: the Institute of Electrophysics at the Urals Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 2021, 20 state-funded spots are allocated for the major in Applied Mathematics and Physics (Bachelor’s degree programme).
