Students from South Ural State University, Kurgan State University, and Tyumen Industrial University have taken part in the selection round of the 9th CASE-IN International Engineering Championship, which is included in “Russia Is a Land of Opportunity” presidential platform.
The CASE-IN International Engineering Championship is an international system of competitions on solving engineering cases held among school pupils, students and young specialists. The aim of the championship is to popularize engineering and technical education and engage the most promising young specialists in the fuel and energy, and mineral resources complexes.
The organisers of the championship are Nadezhnaya Smena Foundation, Non-profit Partnership "Youth Forum of the Mining Industry Leaders", and ООО AstraLogika.
The co-organiser in the Electrical Engineering category of the student league of CASE-IN is the Association of the Russian National Committee of International Council of Large Electric Systems.
The event is supported by leading companies of the fuel and energy, and mineral resources complexes, including: JSC "SO UPS", AK ALROSA (PJSC), ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation, PAO RusHydro, PAO FGC UES, PJSC SIBUR Holding, PJSC Tatneft, JSC NIPIGAS, ООО Siberian Generating Company, ООО IMC Montan, АО Siberian Anthracite, ООО Micromine Rus, OOO Raspadskaya, ООО Prosoft-Systems, JSC Yakut Fuel and Energy Company, and ООО EvrazHolding.
The championship is held in more than 60 universities in Russia and the CIS countries. In the course of the selection rounds February through May 2021, more than 10000 future and young engineers of the fuel and energy, and mineral resources complexes will be solving engineering cases on a single topic of Sustainable Development.
Student teams presented their solutions in the Metallurgy, Electrical Engineering, and Digital Atom categories. Representatives of industry companies as the experts evaluated the ideas of the students and chose the best teams.
The students elaborated their ideas within just 10 days.
Metallurgists presented an analysis of the influence of alloying components on the electrical conductivity of aluminium and its strength characteristics for using in electrically conductive tires of vehicles instead of copper conductors.
The first place was awarded to the AMARKOVY team: Anton Gavriliak (team captain), Aleksandr Punda and Dmitrii Turianskii – students of the SUSU Materials Science and Technologies programme.
“Participation in the competition brought a lot of positive experience; we saw the practical aspects of applying materials science and tried to create new alloys ourselves,” said team captain Anton Gavriliak.
Silver awards were received by the PLUS and MINUS team: Mikhail Mingazhev (team captain), Nikita Abramov, Kseniia Bogatyreva and Danil Polunin – students of the SUSU Materials Science and Technologies programme.
The BLACK METAL team was awarded bronze medals of the selection round. Team participants: Ilia Morozov (team captain), Evgenii Artemiev, Aleksei Rokhmistrov and Pavel Sushchenko – students of the SUSU Technological Machines and Equipment (Technological Equipment Engineering) programme.
Power Engineering students had to, on the basis of the information provided in the case, as well as in the links and additional information, considering general and local restrictions, develop an active energy complex for their regional power system and propose models of the technological and economic functioning of one active energy complex as part of a regional power system (as part of the Unified Energy System of Russia).
The first place was awarded to the INTERENGINEER team: Elizaveta Galliamova (team captain), Aleksandr Sokolov, Vladimir Ustimenko and Danil Khalimov – students of the SUSU Electrical Power Engineering programme.
The second place was awarded to the ISOLATION BREAKDOWN team: Konstantin Stupak (team captain), Valerii Kulpin, Daniil Loginov and Semen Charkin – students of the SUSU Electrical Power Engineering programme.
The third place was awarded to the ENERGOTECH team: Aleksei Somov (team captain), Anatolii Kulakov, Nikita Telezhinskii and Tatiana Chertova – students of the SUSU Electrical Power Engineering programme.
In the Digital Atom category, students created a prototype of a digital system for remote immersion of new employees in the working, communication and cultural environment of the ROSATOM State Atomic Energy Corporation.
The first place was awarded to the PRIMO VICTORIA team: Dmitrii Shkarin (team captain), Ilnar Basharov, Denis Gulak and Zakhar Leontiev – students of Tyumen Industrial University.
“Participation in the championship helped us to distract ourselves from routine studies, brought our team together, and we realized how interesting it is to solve real business problems, burning social issues and determine for ourselves the further vector of development,” said team captain Dmitriy Shkarin.
The second place was awarded to the MASTERS OF CROSSES team: Artem Baev (team captain), Danil Kormilin, Daria Kulikova and Ilia Stepanov – students of the SUSU Applied Mathematics and Computer Science programme.
The third place was awarded to the Team A team: Ivan Rusakov (team captain), Roman Visimskikh, Evgenii Semenov and Aleksei Shchupletsov – students of Kurgan State University.
Participants who took the 1st and 2nd places are invited to the 1/2 finals of the CASE-IN International Engineering Championship, which will be held in a distance format.
The finals of the CASE-IN International Engineering Championship will be traditionally organised in Moscow and will bring together the best student engineering teams from universities of Russia and the CIS countries. The format of the championship (the in-person/distance format) will depend on the epidemiological situation in Russia.
The winners of the finals will be awarded prizes, the opportunity to take part in the all-Russian industry summer forums and advantages when enrolling in the Master’s degree and postgraduate programmes of 20 universities ─ partners of the championship, as well as to take internship at leading companies of their industry.
