A series of master classes by SUSU scientists and invited specialists ended the celebration of the Day of Science at the university on February 8th. The university staff shared their experience with colleagues and students, and together they discussed the means of fulfilling the scientific potential of young and experienced researchers.
As part of the celebration of the Day of Russian Science, a series of events was held at South Ural State University, where participants discussed the scientific and innovative activities of the university and shared their experience in submitting scientific research to highly ranked journals and participating in grants.
"Events which allow scientists to exchange their experience also allow them to get acquainted with alternative points of view on the problems that researchers face and solve through their own efforts. As a result, collaborative ideas emerge, which are transformed either into fundamental research, or applied solutions," said Anton Nurkenov, Head of SUSU Research and Innovation Services.
Danil Pimenov, senior lecturer of the Department of Automated Manufacturing Engineering, and Ivan Erdakov, Associate Professor of the Department of Foundry Production, whose works are always present in the top scientific publications, made a presentation on the preparation of highly ranked publications and cooperation with international teams. They noted that authors of scientific articles should always pay attention to the idea, content, and form of the text.

Oleg Kudryavtsev, Associate Professor of the Department of Engineering Mechanics, and Evgeny Trofimov, Professor of the Department of Materials Science, Physical and Chemical Properties of Materials, gave advice on how to apply for grants. The scientists said that you should prepare for the competitions in advance; many are held annually by the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The first rule of a successful application is to read the conditions of the contest. The Research and Innovation Services specialists can help clarify ambiguous points in the conditions. SUSU scientists learned more about how to prepare grant proposals at the meeting with representatives of the Research and Innovation Services on February 10th.
Alexander Fertman, Director on Science and Education, Skolkovo Foundation, shared on the mechanisms of royalties and the start-up ecosystem with those who intend to commercialize their developments.
"Scientists who want their knowledge to be used must understand how to commercialize research and development. You should not be a snob; it's important to treat others with respect and think about how you can be useful to them. There is no just a single successful way to commercialize. A scientist can interact with an industrial partner, or create his or her own business. To do this, the university should have a professional team that helps build the work competently," commented Alexander Fertman.
Meanwhile a seminar organized by the "University Boiling Point" Centre for Collective Work was held for students. Valery Likholetov, Professor at the Department of Economic Security, conducted a master class on the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ).
Ksenia Semenova, an engineer for patent and invention work at the Research and Innovation Services, talked about how and when a patent can be issued for an invention, what is considered intellectual property, and why it is important.
"We have a lot of talented young people at our university who are open to doing science and research. Of course, such seminars are very important for students, especially for those who plan to do science. We need to tell them about the possibilities of implementing their ideas in practice and how to formalize their intellectual property rights," Ksenia Semenova said.

"Boiling Point" Centre for Collective Work organized a seminar for students
South Ural State University encourages students and young scientists not only to actively engage in science, but also to publish their research in influential scientific publications. Maria Legenchuk, Head of the Electronic Resources Sector of the SUSU Scientific Library, told the audience how to register in three scientometric databases: SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Russian Science Citation Index. She noted that the career of a scientist, engineer, researcher, or inventor is impossible without the publication of scientific works.
"Our goal is to inform young people about how important it is to integrate into the international scientific community. After all, it is not only internationally renowned scientists who are involved in science. Everyone starts somewhere, and publications in journals known in our country and abroad are not only a huge advantage when entering graduate or postgraduate programs, but also a good starting point for your scientific career," summarized Maria Legenchuk.
Events dedicated to the Day of Science will continue at South Ural State University until the end of the week.
