SUSU Took Part in the University Alliance of the Silk Road Presidents Forum

Vice-Rector for International Relations of South Ural State University Olga Yaroshenko delivered a report at the International University Alliance of the Silk Road Presidents Forum, which was hosted online by the Polytechnic University of Milan and the Xi'an Jiaotong University in November this year.

The University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation aimed at openness and international cooperation in higher education. In 2019, South Ural State University joined the UASR and became the only Russian university at this Forum.

The UASR Presidents Forum has three sections, each devoted to a specific topic. The Security for Natural Systems section is devoted to assessing the impact and consequences of natural disasters, the ability to predict and quantify future risks in the conditions of uncertainty, including the after-effects of pandemics, as well as global changes such as climate evolution and environmental dynamics. The Security of Cyber Space section is devoted to the problems of protecting user privacy, network stability, information security, security of network infrastructures and cyber space. The Security for Public Health section discusses the prevention and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the incidence rate and health promotion.

"This is one of the most important forums supported by the Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is a great honour for our university to take part in this forum. The topics discussed at the forum are important not only for universities, but also for whole countries," explained Olga Yaroshenko.

In January 2015, Xi'an Jiaotong University jointly with partner universities founded the Alliance, which was formally established in China. To date, 151 universities from 38 countries and regions have taken part in the Alliance; this project was supported by Russia. The initiative should help develop new mechanisms for interregional partnership, strengthen economical, cultural and scientific ties between the countries of Eurasia, as well as facilitate peace and sustainable development.

By upholding the Silk Road spirit of "peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit", the Alliance creates platforms for cooperation in higher education and promotes regional openness and synergy. UASR promotes institutional exchange and partnerships along the Silk Road routes in training talented people, research, cultural dissemination, political research, and health care.
